An innovative Italian film-maker has just completed a 32-day, 11,000km odyssey around Australia in which he filmed the continent from his Aprilia Atlantic maxi scooter.

Milan-based Emerson Gattafoni has produced several landmark documentaries in Italy on organised crime, and traveled to Colombia to interview convicted drug lord Pablo Escobar.

Gattfoni’s fifth tour of Australia completes a trilogy of road documentaries that will screen on Italy’s government-owned television network RAI.

He will produce three 30-minute programs on his Australian trip.

Gattafoni traveled from Sydney to Melbourne and on to the Great Ocean Road, Mount Gambier, Adelaide, Port Augusta and Coober Pedy.

He completed his hectic itinerary with stops at Uluru, Mount Isa, Cape Tribulation, Heron Island and Brisbane before returning to Sydney.

“The Aprilia Atlantic maxi scooter is new, and has yet to be released onto the market, so it was a very good test in extremely hot conditions,” Gattafoni said.

“It was up to 47 degrees in some parts of our trip, and the temperature gauge hardly moved. The maxi scooter was also very smooth and comfortable, even on our long days where we covered 900km.”

Gattafoni, 45, was accompanied by his partner Valeria Cagnoni, who also rode an Aprilia Atlantic scooter.

“Australia is the last paradise of the planet,” Gattafoni said.

“It is one of the only places left where nature is stronger than humans.”

Emerson Gattafoni is now considering a property purchase on the south coast of New South Wales.

Gattafoni completed a marathon three-month 28,000km motor scooter trip from Venice to Sydney in 1998, passing through Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia en route to Australia.

He was given the key to the city by Lord Mayor Frank Sartor upon arrival in Sydney.

The film-maker recently completed two other two-wheel journeys round North America and Europe/North Africa as part of his travel trilogy.
