Over 100 keen
motorcyclists gathered in a park in the southern Canberra suburb of
Macarthur to commemorate the ACT Road Closures, a series of motorcycle
road races that were held in the suburb before house were built there
during the late 1970's -early 1980's. These races were extremely successful and well attended by both riders and spectators and were only brought to a close when the land was released for housing in early 1982. As part of the ACT Heritage Festival, whose theme this year was "Secrets and Stories" a display of period racing bikes was organized, photos and memorabilia from the Road Closures was displayed and a sign, funded by the ACT Heritage Council, was unveiled. The sign, a permanent reminder of the suburb's racing past, was unveiled by ex-Suzuki Grand prix rider, Stu Avant, who was the occasion's Guest of Honour. Stu was the big winner at the Inaugural Road Closure in October 1978 and kindly volunteered to come back to Macarthur Park for the occasion. A lot of older, but not necessarily wiser motorcycle enthusiasts were attracted to the event and the star of the static display was the ex-works Honda CB1100R, which was ridden to Feature Race success at the March 1981 Road Closure.
All in all, it was a
great event and brought back many wonderful memories of the days when
the quiet streets of the suburb had resounded to the sounds of
motorcycle racing. |
