--  Polaris ramps up two wheel efforts with acquisition of Indian

Polaris, already the owners and producers of Victory Motorcycles, and a powerhouse in the ATV market, has announced the acquisition of Indian Motorcycle, a privately held motorcycle manufacturer based in Kings Mountain, N.C.

Indian was America’s first motorcycle company, founded in 1901. During the first half of the 20th century, Indian became the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. Though recently Indian has been producing premium bikes on a smaller scale, the brand retains significant consumer familiarity and is well-respected for its strong American heritage, by motorcycle enthusiasts. The acquisition of Indian adds a strong asset to the Polaris portfolio, further strengthening the North American company's growing motorcycle business.

Polaris entered the motorcycle industry in 1998 with the launch of Victory motorcycles. The original V92C offering represented the first all-new, American-made motorcycle from a major company in nearly 60 years. Since that first model, Victory have unveiled a collection of award-winning motorcycles. Currently, Victory offer 14 models spanning several riding segments.

Victory and Indian will continue to operate as two separate brands, each with its own models and designs. Indian’s image as a premium, historic brand perfectly complements Victory’s reputation of quality and innovation. Over the next period, Victory will continue to sell existing Indian products as their engineers work to create an Indian line-up that is true to the rich heritage of the brand with the performance and quality that people expect of a premium motorcycle.
