-- Troy Bayliss Classic Qualifying
-- By Wacko Ocker
Old Bar Dirt track at Taree turned on a great meeting to warm up for the ‘Troy
Bayliss Classic’ in 2014, with over 100 riders competing to qualify for a place
in next years’ event.
Heats were hotly contested with some great riding between the senior riders and
the guest rider Jason Crump.
New to the senior ranks were Brayden Elliott #51 and Kane Burns #30, who
acquitted themself well.
The results of the ‘Pro Light’ class were - 1st Josh Pickering #103, 2nd Jarryd
Oram #18 and 3rd Kane Burns #30.
The Pro Open final was a cracker, with 1st place going to Ian Hamilton #718.
Hamilton kept his good form coming from the Australian Titles at Gunnedah, with
Troy Bayliss #21 in 2nd place, and 3rd Mick Kirkness #119. Kirkness on a
borrowed bike, and having just flown in from the USA, battled with Troy,
swapping places in ‘over under’ passing moves throughout the race. Troy’s race
craft kept Mick covered, proving he can still mix it with the best on oil
The Unlimited Final proved to be a race of nerves of steel, with restarts after
Kirkness’s bike jumped the start, then the official’s held the restart up for
some time while sorting it out. The restart saw Hamilton and Kirkness come
together on the hair pin corner to leave the gate open for Troy Bayliss #21 to
take 1st place, 2nd Ian Bisley #4 - ‘Current Australian Champion’, and 3rd
Brayden Elliott #51.
