Supermotard or Super-moto. Whatever name you use. It is fast, it is spectacular and it is increasing in popularity every week. It mixes single cylinder dirt bikes with big brakes and full leathers. As a sport it has appeal for both road bike and dirt bike enthusiasts. Best of all, it pits road racers against off-road racers and shows skills from each discipline. . If you enjoy seeing superbikes backing it into a corner or if you get your highs from MX airtime you will soon get hooked on this exciting motor sport. That is if you’re not already addicted. In October we will see the first round of the 2004 Australian Maxxis Super-moto Championship To add a new element for competitors and spectators, all riders competing for the 2004 Australian Championship Title will be using Maxxis Presa Supermoto tyres. The promoters, WEM, have nominated Maxxis as the control tyre for the Championship. A control tyre means that the factory sponsored teams do not have access to special “limited availability” rubber that’s only obtainable by them. It means closer racing with more importance placed on rider ability and machine set-up The first release of the Maxxis “Presa” range of super-moto tyres in Australia has just landed. PRESA is Italian for “GRIP”. Maxxis say that their new Presa range translates to grip on the track in any language. There are 3 tyre types in the range.
The Presa M6109 Supermoto slicks are available in 3 optional compounds. Grip, grip and more grip. Their construction allows them to be grooved into custom tread designs to hook up where other tyres give up. The Lightweight Superstrong Kevlar belted radial body cuts unsprung mass while assuring a strong, stable footprint for precise control and stability at speed.
Presa M6118 front and M6119 rear. Ready to race tread design allows top performance on a wide range of track conditions. There are 4 race compound choices at the front including ultra-soft “rain” for wet tracks while 3 compound options are offered at the rear. A Kevlar belt controls tyre growth and ensures a large contact patch to enhance stability and grip at high speed. The soft, medium and hard compounds of both front and rear are USA DOT approved for street use.
Presa M6131 front and M6132 rear. The same Kevlar belted reinforced radial construction as the rest of the Presa range but in #730 ultra-soft super sticky RAO rain compound to offer superior grip in the wettest conditions. Advanced tread design channels water away to maintain perfect traction. Low profile 50% aspect ratio rear and 60% aspect ratio front give a larger footprint and excellent “feel” under braking.
But can I use them on the street ? There is a bonus for super-moto street blasters. As well as nearly all of the race compound intermediate pattern tyres being suitable for limited road use, Presa Intermediates are also sold in harder #399 street compound. Designed for high mileage economy on road registered bikes, the M6118 and M6119 ST9 street classification still have awesome grip and have achieved race success at clubman level in the USA and Europe. Recommended retail for fronts is $165.00 with rears costing $214.50 adds up to only $379.50 per set including GST. Front sizes include 120/70 R17, 120/76 R17 with Wets only in 120/60 R17. Rear range is 160/60 R17, 165/56 R17 and Wets only in165/50 R17. Note, not all
patterns and compounds are offered in each size. |
