Another Cudlin in the wars
|
Young Alex Cudlin crashed
in the 125 Stars of Tomorrow race at Phillip Island last weekend. The 15
year old was the youngest rider in the field and was having a reasonable
weekend before being hit from behind resulting in a severely broken left
arm. He was taken to a specialist sports injury hospital in Melbourne. The arm was cleanly broken through both bones, with one of the bones also being split up through the centre. Alex underwent a 3 hour operation which resulted in him having a surgical plate & screws inserted in one bone, wiring inserted through the other bone, and muscle reduction to the forearm, which requires the incision to remain open for a period of 10 days, exposing nerves and muscle. The 2001 racing season has not been a lucky one for either of the Cudlin brothers. Damian, Alex's older brother, was involved in a racing crash earlier in the year when he was also hit from behind by another rider. This crash resulted in Damian breaking his back. Damian has recovered in record time, and will be ready to ride in 2002. Alex is in a lot of pain at the moment, but is hoping to leave the hospital in Melbourne over the next few days. He has been assured by the sports surgeon who operated on him that he will be able to return to racing with the plate still in his arm, and he is determined to be ready for racing next season. |
