On Expedition - Day 14 - Thursday January 25
| ...continued
from day 13
What a day! Left Wangaratta this morning and headed out to Broadford to try my hand at SuperMotard. First up I had a go on the full road circuit before getting on to the RallyCross style Motard circuit complete with dirt section. I had an absolute ball on the tarmac section and tip-toed my way around the dirt section. I am a little bit like a fish out of water in the dirt, great fun though. First up I was given the lend of a KTM 520SX, what an engine... This particular KTM comes with a 4-speed gearbox and I must say on the ultra short gearing that was being run any gear was fine! Unfortunately I only got around the road race circuit on this one and the gearing was way too short to be comfortable. Exiting turn 1 it was maxed out in top by the time I hit the straight. I kept rolling off to preserve the motor. Easy to slide and awesome engine, would have been nice around the road race circuit with some longer gearing. Then it was onto the RallyCross style half tarmac - half dirt circuit on an Alfer VR 250 courtesy of SA Dirt Bikes. The Spanish 2-stroke MX bike had been set up for long track which meant a VERY peaky power band, nothing, nothing, oh there it is, gear, gear gear etc. This was quite a weapon but the engine did make it hard work at times, especially with my limited dirt skills. The power hit hard and in a rush which made it slide a bit quicker than I would have preferred. The aftermarket pipe caused a few problems around the fast tarmac corner near the end of the circuit when on full lean the pipe was scraping and lifting my wheels off the deck! Awesome fun and the easiest way to slide a bike on the tarmac. A Victorian SuperMotard series is kicking off soon and we will give you all the details in late braking news shortly. Riders at this SuperMotard day included Marty Craggill, Kirk McCarthy and Alex Gobert. After losing about 5 gallons of sweat in my leathers in an incredibly warm/humid day it was back on the Mille for a 250 kilometre strop through some great/tight back roads to Glengarry (Near Traralgon). It is from here that I will be hitting the dirt on a KTM 640 LC4 tomorrow for a 2 or 3 day dirt adventure. Now who could say this trip is not varied enough.....
