The first of the 125 GP support races was run after the Friday practice sessions but before the GP boys came out for the Friday qualifying sessions. Mick Kelly streaked away off the line from Jason O'Halloran and Rudi Muller. O'Halloran quickly closed on to the tail Kelly around the back of the circuit. O'Halloran the blew past Kelly down the straight but Kelly got him back on the entry in to turn one. Meanwhile Peter Galvin had got the better of Rudi Muller for 3rd. Then on lap two Kelly went down which left O'Halloran with a healthy 2.5 second lead over Peter Galvin. But Galvin was coming under attack from Muller who wanted that second place back from him. A huge battle for fourth was unfolding with no less than five riders in the hunt for that position. They were Craig Frederickson, Cath Thompson, Bryan Staring, Alan Martinsen and Andrew Willy. This bunch of five riders swapped their running order at nearly every turn and it Willy and Thompson who were leading the group with 3 laps to run. Meanwhile O'Halloran was running two seconds faster than the rest of the field and had built up an 11 second lead over Muller with two laps to run. But Muller and Galvin were still fighting hard over that 2nd position. Then the red flag came out after Paul Campbell came down hard just after the start-finish line after trying to pass a lapped rider. He was conscious but obviously in considerable pain. The race was declared with the results counted back a lap to have the results finalised at six laps. So the first win goes to O'Halloran by 11-seconds with Muller getting second place and Galvin third. Campbell was in that battle for fourth before his unfortunate demise. The fourth place went to Cath Thompson from Andrew Willy.
