Mick Kelly streaked away early on before sliding off at Siberia which left Peter Galvin to take up the mantle out in front.  Galvin then set about building a healthy lead over Andrew Willy who was in turn being closely hounded by young motocross rider Bryan Staring.  Not sure where O'Halloran went, the young Sydney rider may have failed to get off the line or had an early fall or mechanical failure.

Staring got the better of Willy for that 2nd place on lap 3.  Fairly amazing really considering his very limited tarmac experience compared to the rest of the field.  But he has a few junior motocross championships under his belt so he definitely knows how to ride a motorcycle.

Quite a few riders went down after losing the front end in the very wet conditions.  Galvin was having no problems out in front however as the vastly experience multiple time Australian Champion streaked further away to make his lead 6.5 seconds by lap 4.

The battle for 2nd place was running hot though with Staring trying to hold off Willy and Simmonds who was starting to come on strong as the laps progressed.

Simmonds then went past Willy and started to mount a challenge on Staring.  Simmonds was 2-seconds quicker on the fourth lap than Staring and Willy. That was enough to leave Willy behind but Staring was not giving up quite so easily.

Simmonds did get the better of Staring though and Willy came back strong to relegate Staring to fourth place as they got the black and white flag.
