O'Neal Honda's Shane Metcalfe ended the Supercross season on a high, taking out the Pro Open class at the Brisbane finale on October 11th.
After a week
of rest the Mt Barker (SA) rider was desperate to rekindle that winning feeling, his last round win was the opening round way back in January. While still nursing a badly damaged shoulder Metcalfe was
unchallenged around the twenty lap final, and took an emphatic win aboard his O’Neal Honda CR250R from series champion Jay Marmont.
"I just wanted to be smooth and not make any mistakes, because
that's when it's going to hurt," a relieved Metcalfe said. "The track was a little more open than the last couple of races we've had so the shoulder didn't get too much of a pounding."
Metcalfe
gave his rivals little hope in the final taking the hole-shot into the first corner, just like his semi final, then cruising through to the victory and thus securing third place in the Australian
Supercross Masters Title.
"The bike was awesome and the team did a fantastic job. We've been working with some new suspension changes and everything worked perfectly tonight. You can't complain
too much about four hole-shots! The track really suited my style, with big jumps that were simple but you still had to think a lot to get around quickly," Metcalfe added.
Cody Cooper's dream
racing debut of the all new CRF250R four-stroke in the Pro Lite class turned to disaster in practice when he crashed heavily while trying to clear the triple jump. A battered and bruised Cooper managed
to front the starter for the heat races but didn't figure in the results and was unable to make the final. "It's not what I expected," said Cooper. "I'm more disappointed for the team than myself as I
thought that this was my best chance to show them what the bike is capable of. I didn't get the drive off the ramp and came up a bit short and cased out on the down ramp."
Danny Anderson
continued his struggle to get the CR125 off the line with yet another host of bad starts that left him with too much work to do to keep in touch with the leaders. Bundled out of yet another final a
bitterly disappointed Anderson said, "I just can't seem to get it together when it counts."
The team now moves onto the last race (non Championship status) at Gosford (NSW) on November 1st where
Metcalfe will rekindle his rivalry with Yamaha's Chad Reed. "Chad's certainly the benchmark rider that everyone wants to beat. Not many people over there (USA) can keep up with him so we'll just have to
see what we can do."
