The
scenic Central Coast of NSW turned it on for the first round of the 2003
SX masters, a nice sunny day and close of a full capacity crowd of 20,000
people turning up to see some bar banging action and plenty of air-time in
their own back yard.Troy Carroll Dominated the 125cc class at the 1st round of the SX masters, winning all three motos aboard his 250F. In fact the only other rider that was able to stay with Troy was his brother Quentin, also on a 250F, and finishing 2nd overall. Mitch Hoad stayed consistent to finish third. Danny Anderson and Robbie Marshall both showed speed all night but were hampered with bad starts and crashes. Plenty of contenders in the open class but it was Motorex KTM, Jay Marmont taking the first two finals with Metcalfe, Hogan and Dorron all fighting it out for the remaining positions. Disaster hit Marmont when he collided with Hogan on the first corner in the third moto, both riders going down with Marmont relegated to the back of the field before fighting his way back through the pack. Ham jumped to the lead but was chased down by Shayne Metcalfe and Troy Dorron. The battle between Metcalfe and Dorron went down to the last lap when Dorron made a move but then was baulked by a lapped rider which handed the win to Metcalfe. There was then major confusion over the scoring system as to who actually won the event. The scores had Troy Dorron coming away the winner with 43 points, Metcalfe 2nd also with 43 points and Ham in third with 39 points. All the podium presentations and champagne sprays etc. were done in that order. But then the boys in the pits started adding up how they thought the points should have been scored according to the rules. Major dramas erupted when Team Honda came up with what they thought was the final points for the round. Which looked very different to what had just taken place on the podium! In the end it was sorted out that the Honda camp was indeed correct and thus Shane Metcalfe came away from Gosford with the 250 lead over Troy Dorron and Jay Marmont. The dramas seem to have stemmed from the scorers using the previous points system instead of the new scoring system. The next SX round will be in two weeks (8/2/03) in Victoria.
