| The heat
was on at Oran Park on Sunday 19 Jan 03 during the first round of the NSW
Supermotard Riders Club Championship. All classes provided fast, furious and spectacular supermotard action and quite fittingly the race of the day was left to the Supermotard Cup final where after 16 hot laps the top five crossed the finish line together separated by brave outbraking manoeuvres and where the slightest mistake meant relegation. Riders qualified for their final 16 grid positions in semi finals and a last chance qualifier gave four riders an opportunity to fill the grid to 20. Mark Avard (Husaberg 650), Graham Cheney (Yam 426), Scott Roots (Yam 450), Adam Altham (Yam 426) and SM newcomer former MX star Rob Twyerould (KTM 660) all made an attempt to lead and break but none could break the shackles and so the freight train continued throughout until the final laps, Twyerould in 3rd drifted slightly and Roots and Altham pounced, but Twyerould was still in with a chance using the awesome power of the KTM. Avard and Cheney ranged up along each other but Cheney couldn't push past and Altham made a gutsy move on the fastest corner of the track to outrun Roots on the final corner to complete the podium. A new Supermotard class was introduced at Oran Park, up to 250 4 stroke and up to 125 2 stroke to accommodate this ever-growing 250 four stroke market and it was Jordan Mann (Yam250F) who took the challenge up to young hotshot Rowan Teggart (Kaw 125) and took the days honours. 3rd was picked up by Jackson Pine in his first ever race meeting. Graham Cheney was able to clean sweep the Sport class but it wasn't all his own way having to battle with an ever improving pro mx rider Adam Altham. Altham was relegated to the back of the grid for the second race when he inadvertently ran straight on at a corner and a heroic ride saw him place 4th while Cheney, Roots and Jay Normoyle (Hon XR420) took out the top three. The final race was another cracker with Cheney taking the honours in front of Roots and Altham. Twyerould and Avard shared the race wins in the big bore Prestige class with a toss of the coin deciding the most spectacular rider. Paul Caridi (KTM LC4) scored third in the first leg with another newcomer, enduro rider Stuart Bennet (KTM 525) taking a fourth and two third placings. The Supermotard Juniors races where whitewashed by Sam Muldoon (Kaw 125) with Beau Brearley (Kaw 125) taking second. The SRCA club was assisted with product support from Red Bull energy drink, Red Bull provided refreshments and a area of shade to relieve spectators from the heat. An enthusiastic crowd
enjoyed the antics from the winners at the end of the days racing and all
agreed it was truly a great finish to a great days racing and a successful
club event. |
