An exciting final round of the WA Road Racing Championships was played out at Barbagallo Raceway late last month. The weather forecast had indicated rain but the day
turned out fine enough for some of the Supersport competitors to get within a second of Kevin Curtain’s lap record. Supersport was always going to be the class that was going to produce a nail biting finale, and nobody was disappointed with the fierce battle played out for the crown. The Rural Building Company sponsored championship came down to the last corner of the final race. Emerging in front of reigning WA Supersport Champion Russell Nash was 27 year old Strett Cull, who clinched his second Supersport Championship at the flag in the final race. While Cull took the state title on his YZF-R6 Yamaha it was Alan Watts on the new CBR600RR Honda who won the round. Watts was in unbeatable form and dominated the last round of the five round series. His pace was so hot that he could have secured third place in some of the superbike races with the race times he was setting on his 600cc production based machine. Russell Nash and Scott Tulk tried to challenge YZF-R1 Yamaha pilot Stuart Adams for the Shell Advance WA Superbike Championship. But 41 year old Adams wrapped up a perfect set of results at the final round to complete his dominance of the 2003 title. At the other end of the scale Mullaloo resident Tom Hatton became the youngest ever WA Road Race Champion when he clinched the 125 Grand Prix title from Bob Humphreys. Craig Frederickson was next best in the points after starting from the rear of the grid all year as a handicap brought about by his ‘A’ grade status. The meeting marked Frederickson’s retirement from racing. Victoria Park’s Stewart Landers wrapped up his third consecutive 250 Production Championship after yet another dominant display by the 45 year old. Landers also retired at the end of the race meeting. Jacob Furlong made the trip from Margaret River to secure second place overall in the championship from Parmelia’s Clint Clarke. Young Anthony Fagan proved that you don’t have to have grey hair to pilot a sidecar fast by lifting the Motorcycle Movers Sidecars Championship with Mundaring based swinger Bruce Rodgers. Clive Watson and Dirk Jeal earned second place on their tiny 600cc F2 machine ahead of a fleet of 1,000cc machines. Some final round crashes was not enough to stop Wanneroo’s Ben Stronach from winning the ‘B’ Grade Series after his great run of form at the previous rounds. Danny Abrey and Paul Nathan were next best. Stronach will be moving up a notch next year when he hops aboard the Drilling & Grouting sponsored GSX-R1000 Suzuki in order to try and wrestle the outright Superbike Championship from his Yamaha mounted uncle, Stuart Adams. Stronach will be coached along by retired WA Champion Sam Reynolds with help from Ivan Carstensen and Wayne Kenward. Craig McSweeney lifted the Rural Building Company Superstock Series from Chris Taylor and Mike Ward while Mark Schnierer took out the highly competitive Two Wheel Wreckers Clubman Series in his first season of racing. |
