World SuperBike 2001 - Round 2 - Race 1 report
By, Trevor Hedge

Bostrom has dominated the time-sheets thus far this weekend, can he keep it up for the races?

They're off - Bayliss gets the jump and leads into the first corner, Corser 2nd, then Edwards & Bostrom.  Edwards underneath Corser in a risky move for this early in the race and up into 2nd.

Edwards is riding very aggressively and looking for a way through on Bayliss but the Ducati man has upped the wick a little and is leaving the Honda man behind.  Hodgson looks to be catching Bostrom a little.  Yanagawa on a move and now catching Hodgson.

Lap 2 and 8 tenths cover the top 4 - Bayliss, Edwards, Corser, Bostrom.

Craggill has improved on his lowly starting position and is no up into 17th.

Edwards into the lead.  Yanagawa through on Hodgson for 4th, then Chili also went through on Hodgson relegating the reigning British SuperBike Champion to 6th.

Lap 3 and the top 4 are still in the same order with Edwards out front and 1.2 seconds cover the leading quartet now.  This looks as though it will be a close race but with the less oxygen available at this altitude the supreme fitness of the Troys from Australia may be a telling factor.  Bayliss rides up to 100 kilometres per day on a pushbike!

James Toseland penalised a stop & go for jumping the start.

20 laps to go - Edwards now has 7 tenths on Bayliss with Corser about the same distance further behind Bayliss.  Parkes 12th, Craggill 17th, Martin 20th.

Edwards is still taking out a couple of tenths every lap and just set the fastest lap.  Okada in the pits, the gods are not smiling on the Japanese rider as his Honda has presumably suffered another mechanical failure.

The Texan's Honda is now moving around a lot, maybe he went out on some very soft rubber?  Bayliss took a couple of tenths out of him on that lap.

15 laps to run and Edwards has picked up the pace again to take that couple of tenths back from Bayliss.  Corser is a further 2 seconds behind and has opened a bit of a gap over Bostrom.  The youngest man in the field, Australia's Broc Parkes, is in 13th.  Borja down.  Hodgson's bike failed.

Edwards is working very hard indeed and sliding the Honda more than we have ever seen him before but Bayliss is still managing to keep the American in sight.  But the Texan took a couple of tenths out of Bayliss on that lap to now have a 1.5 second lead.

11 laps to run and Corser still in 3rd with Bostrom now only 8 tenths behind the Aprilia mounted Australian who is sliding the Aprilia around a lot now, but they are all sliding around quite a bit with Bayliss probably looking the smoothest but he is still losing a couple of tenths a lap to the Texan, now 1.7 seconds between them.

Bayliss took a tenth back out of Edwards that lap but the gap still 1.6 seconds,  Corser and Bostrom are a further 4 seconds back but if the Aprilia pilot is not careful he will have Bostrom's Ducati under him somewhere soon.

Now 8 laps to run and Bayliss had a bad lap which lost him some time to the Texan who now has a 2.2 second lead.

Parkes still in 12th.

These guy are really sliding here at Kyalami, they look to be sliding the front into a couple of the corners to wash off some speed so they can make it round before getting straight on the throttle and using the throttle to get the bike turned, they are all doing it!

6 to run and 2.4 seconds is now the lead Edwards has over Bayliss.  Corser has now left Bostrom behind and is on a HUGE charge, the fastest man out there but all the times are coming down now as the boys put everything on the line to close down the gap to the Honda out front but they have their work cut out for them.  I tipped Bayliss, Corser and then Edwards so fingers crossed......

Coming up on lapped traffic now which could play a major factor in the results.  3 laps to go, the blue flags are out to warn the riders that they are about to be taken.  Edwards is still holding it together though.

Bayliss now 2.2 seconds behind Edwards and Corser a further couple of seconds behind so unless something drastic happens this will be the finishing order - Edwards, Bayliss, Corser.
