CDR/Nokia/Yamaha’s Darryll King has won the pro open class at round four of the Maxxis Australian Motocross championship at Coolum today.

The reigning champion put on an amazing spectacle for the record crowd coming from last to second in the opening thirty minute moto then passing race leader Daryl Hurley on the final lap of the second race to take the race and round victory.

King said he suffered from the hot conditions in the opening race.

"The heat got to me in the opening race I felt drained and really uncomfortable," King said. "Thankfully the cloud came over in time for the second race.

"I stayed with Hurley throughout the second race and it paid off on the last lap.

"I felt energised and in control - it was great!” King added.

CDR/Nokia/Yamaha's Darryll King is currently second in the championship on 176 points only seven points behind championship leader Daryl Hurley who has 183points. King’s younger brother Shayne King is third on 157points.

CDR/Nokia/Yamaha’s Darryll King won the round ahead of Daryl Hurley and Shayne King.

In the pro lites King’s team-mate Troy Carroll collided with the bike of fallen rider Robbie Marshall badly injuring his knee and putting him out of the opening thirty minute race.

After some attention from race medics Carroll lined up for the start of the second race and put in a strong performance to finish sixth despite his injury.

"I felt great in qualifying but then I hit Robbie Marshall and tweaked my knee and was forced out of the first race," Carroll said.

"I came back in the second moto and felt really strong, it was good to redeem some points after a DNF in the first.

KTM's Ryan Marmont won race two and the round ahead of team mate Daniel McCoy and Serco Yamaha's Cameron Taylor.

Serco Yamaha

Serco Yamaha's Cameron Taylor is the most consistent rider in the Maxxis Australian Motocross Championship, a third place at Coolum today sees him as the only rider in his class to finish on the podium in all four rounds of the championship to date.

Taylor finished second in the opening race after a small off on the second last lap opened the door for Suzuki's Luke Burkhart to sneak through and take the win.

Taylor’s team-mate Robbie Marshall put in a tremendous effort after crashing on the opening lap. The twenty-one year old Queensland rider fought back from dead last passing an incredible twenty eight riders to finish twelfth.

A bad start in the second race left Taylor in twentieth position and over fifteen seconds off the leaders.

The series leader fought back to finish fifth while his team mate Robbie Marshall who was battling the flu all weekend finished 13th.

KTM's Ryan Marmont won the second race, Honda rider Warren Smart was second and KTM’s Daniel McCoy was third.

Taylor said poor starts prevented him extending his championship lead.

"Today was the best I've ridden in a long time," Taylor said. "Unfortunately it was the worst I have ever started.

"I know I am fit and I know I am fast, if I can get my starts right I know I can win.

Marmont won the round ahead of team-mate Daniel McCoy with Serco Yamaha's Cameron Taylor third.

Team owner Gavin Eales said he was confident his riders could both pull off a win once they get on top of their starts.

"If we can start at the front we can win,” Eales said. “Both riders are racing well they just keep having to come from so far back because their starts are letting them down.

Serco Yamaha's Cameron Taylor leads the pro lites championship on 156 points ahead of Ryan Marmont on 140 points and Daniel McCoy on 118 points.

Round five of the Maxxis Australian Motocross Championship will be held at Newcastle Motocross Track on Sunday 22nd April.
