| No Fear Honda’s long term
performer Troy Dorron forged back into his customary position at
the top end of the field this past weekend at the Raymond
Terrace, Newcastle round of the Australian Motocross
Championships where he put in two hard edged, consistent rides
to take fourth overall for the round by one point from series
leader Cameron Taylor. It wasn’t an easy weekend by any means for the 33 year old whose motocross season thus far has been one of the more thorny of his career. However his fighting spirit has not faltered, and he continues to close the gap enough to keep a podium finish prospect alive. Doz’s qualifying sessions were fraught with difficulty with as he struggled to get in a clean lap at any point during the morning rounds at the sunny, NSW circuit. The gap between the first and last place qualifiers was ultimately minimal at around three seconds, however the line up was set and Troy found himself with a less than ideal pick of the start gate. This did not damper his focus however, and after coming out of the first corner dead last in moto one, the ever popular Dorron worked his way up one step at a time to finish fifth. In the second moto of the day, Doz once again had to deal with the short end of the stick after getting tangled up in a first corner crash along with Daniel Reardon. He knuckled down hard and in a repeat performance, worked his way back up to fifth, finishing the day with 31 points just behind Robbie Marshall, Matt Moss and Luke Burkhart. Troy reiterated his intention of continuing to fight for a top three series finish. “There are still a few rounds left and the point spread in the top seven positions is still relatively tight. I have every intention of trying to make it to the top three,” he said. “Doz rode extremely well this weekend,” Team Manager Pip Harrison commented. “The results were all over the place for most of the guys out there so I believe he put in the most consistent ride of the weekend.” Troy’s fellow Honda Pro Lite rider and 2004 Champion, Cody Cooper faired somewhat worse as he continued to tussle with a difficult day. Now recovered from a torn AC joint, proceedings started off well at Newcastle with the young Kiwi qualifying in second. It was an unusually frustrating event, however, for the fast and furious Cooper as he failed to pick up any points for the round after crashing out in the first moto and knocking himself about in a serious manner. Cody had a rest and went back out to give it a go in the second moto to the best of his ability. Eventually, he had to pull in due to pain and soreness incurred from the earlier bout with his handlebars. The 21 year old’ will continue to combat the odds to try and move up from his current 13th place position, an unlikely spot for a highly talented rider. “Things have definitely not gone to plan for me since the season started,” Cooper said. “I’ll just try and regroup and get my head right for the next round.” In the Pro Open stakes, the Team anxiously await word from Craig Anderson’s doctor as to whether he can get back on a bike now that the cast holding his broken foot together has come off. “He is so raring to go it is unbelievable,” Harrison said. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy so motivated to get back on a bike before. Its very inspiring.” Depending on his recovery, Ando is hoping to ride in the next round at Penguin, Tasmania on June 12th. After missing three rounds, he now sits in the 8th place spot with three more meetings to go. |
