King has notched up his fifth consecutive podium finish in as
many rounds at round five of the Maxxis Australian Motocross
Championship at Newcastle today. King finished second in both thirty minute pro open moto’s behind Suzuki’s Daryl Hurley giving him second overall for the round. The reigning champion who is currently sitting second in the championship has proven to be one of the most consistent riders in the field finishing in the top three in every race so far this season. King got a bad start in the first moto languishing mid pack before charging through the field to second place by the third lap of the race. King fought hard to catch his compatriot nemesis Daryl Hurley but was unable to better the pace of the kiwi rider. “I got a really bad start in the first race and was playing catch up from the beginning,” King said. “I fought my way up to second pretty quickly and managed to make a small gain on Daryl (Hurley) throughout the race but in the end he had got too far ahead while I was working my way up to the front. “I got a great start in the second race and I knew I had to get out and stay with Daryl to give myself any chance of taking the win but unfortunately I had problems with my radiator and the header pipe broke so I lost quite a bit of power and had to back off. “We haven’t given up on a third consecutive championship there is still 150points up for grabs over three rounds and as this championship has shown anything can happen,” King said. Daryl Hurley won the round ahead of CDR/Nokia/Yamaha’s Darryll King and Suzuki’s Danny Ham. CDR/Nokia/Yamaha’s Troy Carroll was back to his best in the opening round of the pro lites class putting on a strong display to fight back from tenth to finish second behind Luke Burkhart. Disaster struck Carroll in the second race when he got tangled in a first corner crash with five other bikes and broke his front brake leaver. The young Queenslander came in and the team changed the leaver but the bike had sustained too much damage and after a couple of laps TC was forced to retire. The race was won by fellow Yamaha rider Robbie Marshall ahead of Danny Anderson and Matt Moss. A disappointed Carroll said he was thankful many of the other top ten contenders also failed to finish one of today’s races. “I can’t believe my luck,” Carroll said. “I was totally pumped after my US trip. “After coming second in the first race I really thought we were back on track, it is such a shame as there were a lot of points to be made today if I had finished both races and I could have moved a fair way back up the championship ladder,” Carroll said. “Despite all of that the bike was great and I felt really comfortable out there riding today. “I think the trip to the states helped me a lot I seem to have changed the way I ride and choose my lines and it really paid off in that opening race,” he said. Round six of the Maxxis Australian Motocross Championship will be held at Tasmania’s Penguin Motocross Track on Sunday 12th June.
