CDR/Nokia/Yamaha’s Darryll King has leapt into the lead of the Maxxis Australian Pro Open Motocross Championship following today’s sixth round of the series at Penguin in Tasmania.

King finished third overall for the round after two sensational races that saw the Kiwi veteran forced to race from near the back of the pack in both races.

In the opening pro open race King missed the jump on the start and found himself with the arduous task of fighting back from dead last. The reigning champion, with his never say die attitude powered through the field to finish fourth behind Daryl Hurley, Craig Anderson and his younger brother Shayne King.

In the second race King got a better start but was still caught mid pack as he approached the first turn. King rode extremely well on the rutty, hard to pass Penguin track and was up in the top three by mid race distance after series front runner Hurley retired with engine problems.

King who is chasing his third consecutive title passed Anderson with two laps to go to take the chequered flag second behind sibling Shayne King and in the process took the championship lead from Hurley by only two points.

King said his results could have been better had he got his starts right.

“I could have had a much better result today if I had got better starts,” King said.

“They were terrible and really cost me a better podium position.

“Now I am leading the championship the real challenge starts now and the next fourteen days will be critical,” he said.

“The whole CDR/Nokia/Yamaha team have been amazing they are really throwing everything at helping me win this championship.

“I really hope the weather back home will be kind to me this week,” King said. “Prior to this round I only rode four out of twenty days because of the appalling conditions.

“I’m in the box seat right now so I need to make it happen.

After a string of bad luck King’s team mate Troy Carroll finally got the monkey off his back with a thrilling win in the opening pro lites race of the day.

Carroll showed tremendous form and was in second place out of first turn in the opening race after a fantastic start. While Carroll settled down and found his race rhythm race leader Ryan Marmont pulled out a five second lead and the CDR/Nokia/Yamaha rider was forced to step up the pace.

Carroll rode a sensational race catching and passing Marmont at half race distance then storming home to take the chequered flag ahead of Cameron Taylor and Ryan Marmont.

The twenty-five year old Queensland rider got good start in second race and came out of turn one second behind Danny Anderson. Halfway through the race he lost momentum and made a small misstate that caused him crash in a tight turn and stall the engine of his Yamaha YZ250F.

Carroll had to settle for seventh in the race and fourth overall for the round but the thirty nine points collected today elevated him from seventh to fourth in the championship and has put him back in the hunt for a top three finish

“It was great to get the monkey off my back today,” Carroll said.

“I had a great first race and was really comfortable on the bike.

“The CDR/Nokia/Yamaha team have done a great job on the bike in the last two weeks it was fantastic today,” he said.

“In the second race I got a bit fatigued, made a mistake then I went down and it took me a while to get the bike going again.

“I am going to Adelaide to win and put myself back into the top three in the championship,” Carroll added.

The Penultimate round of the Maxxis Australian Motocross Championship will be held at Adelaide’s Gilman Motocross Track on Sunday June 26.

Serco Yamaha

Serco Yamaha’s Cameron Taylor has won the pro lites class and extended his championship lead at round six of the Maxxis Australian Motocross Championship in Penguin, Tasmania today.

It wasn’t such a happy day for Taylor’s team mate Robbie Marshall who damaged ligaments in his ankle after catching his foot in a rut while challenging for the lead in the first pro lites moto of the day.

Both Serco Yamaha riders blasted from the start line holding third and fourth respectively in the opening laps of race one with Marshall passing Taylor and second placed Ryan Marmont by lap five of the thirty minute race.

While chasing down race leader Troy Carroll twenty minutes into the race, Marshall got his foot caught in one of the deep ruts coming down a hill and tore ligaments around his left ankle which will see him out of competition for at least two weeks.

Taylor moved into second place and raced hard to make up ground on Carroll but was unable to catch his fellow Yamaha rider and finished second with Ryan Marmont third.

In the second race Taylor got another good start and was sitting fourth on the first corner of the opening lap behind Danny Anderson, Ryan Marmont and Troy Carroll. Once the race settled Taylor strategically made his move passing Carroll and Marmont to take second place by midway through the race.

Taylor then focused on chasing down race leader Danny Anderson and despite recording the fastest lap of the race ran out of time to complete his mission before the chequered flag fell.

First place on the day and a solid thirty nine point championship were the rewards for the Serco Yamaha rider’s efforts.

Taylor said he was relieved to finally put two good races together.

“I got two good starts and was able to finally put two good races together,” Taylor said

“My Yamaha YZ250F was awesome today, it feels like everything has gelled this weekend and come together.

“Now I have extended my championship lead to thirty nine points I will be able to ride the next two rounds with less pressure and hopefully win more races,” Taylor said.

The Serco Yamaha rider has increased his points tally to 213 points and now leads the pro lites championship by 39 points ahead of Ryan Marmont on 192 points and Luke Burkhart on 175 points.

It was a bitterly disappointing day for Robbie Marshall who will be sidelined for at least two weeks.

“I am so disappointed,” Marshall said. “I have really been riding at my all time best and was looking good for a top two championship result.

“These things happen I am not going to give up and will be back on the bike as soon as I can."
