King has finished runner up in the 2005 Maxxis Australian Pro
Open Motocross Championship following today’s nail biting final
round of the series at Queensland’s Conondale Motocross Track. The 2004 Champion rode bravely with a broke foot which will require plastering upon his return to New Zealand on Tuesday. King was second off the start in the opening race and quickly took the lead holding out championship leader Darryl Hurley for the early laps of the thirty minute race. Hurley passed King heading up the notorious Conondale hill and the CDR/Nokia/Yamaha rider then found himself embroiled in a battle with Craig Anderson for second Anderson came out on top and King had to settle for third place until race officials announced they had given Hurley with fifteen second penalty for failing to show due caution at a flag point which elevated King to second place behind newly appointed race winner Craig Anderson. King needed to win the second race to retain his title but it wasn’t to be, while the Yamaha rider was in second place challenging for the lead he felt a vibration in his Yamaha YZ450F and was forced to slow down to inspect the cause which cost him his second position. Congealed mud was found to be the cause and King picked up the pace reclaiming second with only six minutes to go. King soldiered on and pulled out a four second lead on Anderson as he set about reeling in race leader Hurley. Despite his amazing efforts the chequered flag fell and King had to settle for second in the race and the 2005 championship. A bitterly disappointed King said he would be back to reclaim the number 1 plate from Hurley next year. “Second really means nothing to me,” King said. “I am so disappointed I couldn’t retain the number 1 plate for the CDR/Nokia/Yamaha team but I will be back and I look forward to taking the plate from Hurley next year. “The bike was great but once the vibration started it seemed to get worse and worse so I had no choice but to slow down and inspect the cause of it. “I battled all race with my foot which I will get set in plaster once I get home on Tuesday,” King added. The CDR/Nokia/Yamaha team prepared two bikes for today’s pro lites class with young Yamaha rider Matt Moss joining Troy Carroll for the final round of the series. Carroll holeshot the first race but it was Moss who quickly took the lead as Carroll slipped back to fourth on the opening laps. The Wollongong youngster cleared out and led the race until five minutes before the end of the race when an oil line broke causing the bike’s engine to cease. Two small errors cost Carroll dearly in the second half of the race and he eventually finished in sixth place. In the second pro lites moto Moss got the holeshot and settled comfortably in third place on the opening lap while Carroll was caught up mid pack. Moss rode a strong race and finished a credible fifth place while Carroll languished in twelfth place unable to settle into a comfortable rhythm and by his own admission small and costly mistakes were his Achilles heal. CDR/Nokia/Yamaha Team owner Craig Dack said this year’s national motocross championship was arguably the most competitive he had seen in over a decade. “It has been the best championship in years,” Dack said. “Even though I am not one for coming second I am thrilled with this result considering the pedigree of riders competing in the pro open series this year. “The icing on DK’s result today was watching young Matt Moss lay down the gauntlet to the experienced pro lites riders today. “We will now turn our attention to the Supercross season and look forward to the return of Cheyne Boyd who is currently training with our good friend Chad Reed in the United States. While Suzuki protested the steward’s penalty from the first pro open race the steward’s decision was upheld. The 2005 Australian Supercross Masters which gets underway at Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday 23rd July.

has won the Maxxis Australian Motocross Pro Lites Championship
title after finishing third overall at the final round of the
series at Queensland’s Conondale circuit today.
