--  Unedited notes from our live text updates which ran live from the circuit --

  • 1248 - Galvin takes the win by 2 seconds in the end over Cath Thompson who crossed the line virtually side by side with New Zealander Sam Smith.  Next home was Andrew Willy, followed by Muller, Campbell, Bell, Panayi, Coleman, Dunn, Scott, Fox, Grogan, Brugeaud, Heidke, Taylor, Cutting, Malley, Humphreys, Patton, Wilkinson
  • 1244 - Sam Smith is all over the place with his race lines but there is no doubt he certainly knows how to ride as he is mixing it up well with Galvin and Thompson. If he knew the right race line there is little doubt the Kiwi would be going quite a bit faster and could pull away from the experienced pair but Galvin and Thompson are about as experienced as they come.
  • 1239 - Five laps to run and Galvin, Smith and Thompson have cleared out and are waging a heady battle over the lead. Next best, some 6 seconds behind, is Andrew Willy in 4th ahead of Muller, Campbell, Bell, Metcher, Scott, Dunn, Coleman, Panayi, Grogan
  • 1235 - As they start the second lap it is Cath Thompson leading the charge from Galvin, Smith, Muller, Campbell, Willy, Scott, Bell, Metcher, Panayi, Dunn and Grogan rounds out the top 12
  • 1234 - The Aussie 125s are away with Galvo leading the group through turn one
  • 1233 - Aussie 125cc riders finishing their warm up lap now. All manner of ancient machinery has been dragged out of the shed for this one... Some of which didn't even manage to complete the warm up lap...
  • 1229 - The first Aussie 125cc support race is up next. When that has been run and won Wayne Gardner is going out for a couple of laps on a Repsol Honda RC211V

--  M.A. Report --

Experience prevailed over youth in a gripping commencement to the Glen Cameron Group-backed Aussie 125 program at this year’s Polini Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

41-year-old polesitter Peter Galvin (Metzeler Tyres) eventually won the eight-lap opener, but not without some serious pressure from another 40-plus evergreen, Cath Thompson (Portland Group), and 17-year-old New Zealander Sam Smith (East Coast Mustangs).

The trio, all aboard Honda RS125s, was never more than 0.5sec apart during the first half of the race, with Smith providing most of the pyrotechnics – especially under brakes at Turn Four!

However, the 17-year-old was also taking some adventurous lines in his debut race at Phillip Island, and the guile of Galvin eventually saw him build a nice little buffer in the last two laps.

Galvin also set the fastest lap of the race on his last trip around the 4.448km circuit – a 1:43.960.

“That was a good race, and I managed to put my head down a little bit at the end to make sure of victory,” said Galvin. “We are just taking small steps at a time with the machine, and at the moment it’s paying dividends.

“We’ve still got to get a little bit more out of the engine, but that will come.”

Galvin, the 2005 Australian 125 GP champion with one round remaining, finished 2.076sec ahead of Thompson, who managed to sneak past Smith on the penultimate lap and hold her position all the way to the flag.

Despite being bested by Thompson, Smith was ecstatic with his maiden Phillip Island adventure, although he did have a few nervous moments.

“That was excellent, and I’m glad I made the effort to come over,” said Smith. “The standard in Australia is so good that it can’t help but improve my riding.

“I’ve been thinking about taking the Supersport route in the future, but these bikes are seriously fun around here.

“I’d now love to come back for the final round of the Aussie 125 title in November.”

Behind, Andrew Willy (Morey Oil South Pacific Yamaha TZ125) and Paul Campbell (Shark Helmets RS125) failed to take advantage of their front-row starts and were fourth and fifth respectively – well in arrears of the top three.

Willy, 33, won two of the three Aussie 125 supports in 2004.

Meanwhile, South Aussie Rudi Muller (Aerostrip Australia RS125) stalked Campbell all the way to the finish, while Vincent Bell (Carkeet Transport RS125) and C-grader Chris Panayi (R&J Batteries RS125) were seventh and eighth.

The second eight-lap race will be held at 12.30pm tomorrow.
