Normal service resumed in today’s second Glen Cameron Group Aussie 125 race at the 2005 Polini Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, with four-time national champion Peter Galvin (Metzeler Tyres Honda RS125) again claiming a comprehensive victory.

Everything about the 41-year-old’s win on his Honda RS125 eclipsed his effort in yesterday’s opener – he increased his winning margin over Cath Thompson (Portland Group RS125) from 2.076 to 2.734sec; lowered the best lap of the weekend to 1:43.163; and completed the eight-lap journey over six seconds faster.

“That was another marked improvement, which we’ve been aiming for the whole time,” said Galvin. “Sometimes things don’t happen in a hurry, and you’ve just got to be patient on these bikes.

“That’s how I approached that race. I knew Cath would be with me from the start, but like yesterday I was able to set my best time on the last lap, which was really satisfying.”

Thompson, a merchant banker from Sydney, stalked Galvin for the first half of the race, and even managed to sneak in front on the fourth lap.

However, Galvin was wise to his off-track partner’s caper and, after he moved back into the lead a short time later, he immediately set about stamping his authority once and for all.

In the RS125-dominated field, free-wheeling New Zealander Sam Smith (East Coast Mustangs) completed the same trifecta as race one, but only after getting the better of a fearsome dual with Rudi Muller (Aerostrip Australia).

ACT rider Paul Campbell (Shark Helmets) was a lonely fifth, as was sixth-placed Vincent Bell (Carkeet Transport).

The third and final race – this one a six-lapper - will be held in front of a huge Sunday crowd at 10.20am.
