Honda Australia officially launched their naming right’s sponsorship agreement with RACESAFE yesterday at their rider training facility (HART), an appropriate location considering safety was clearly the message of the day.

RACESAFE are Australia’s largest specialised motorsport safety service and are the only organisation providing a full range of racetrack emergency services.

Their personnel are a group of highly trained medical and safety professionals with a common interest in motorsport. They provide their time and professional skills in the interests of motorsport safety whether that be for bikes or V8 Supercars.

The Honda RACESAFE Medical Team will service all of the Australian Superbike Championships to be held at a variety of circuits around the country this year.

Since its foundation in 1948, Honda has put a large amount of resources into developing safety initiatives worldwide as well as here within Australia.

Honda established the Suzuka Circuit in Japan over 40 years ago to offer a motor sport complex that provides an environment where people of all ages can enjoy both two and four wheeled activities in a safe environment.

In Australia, Honda now has driving and riding facilities both here in Melbourne as well as in New South Wales.

Honda’s General Manager of Motorcycles, Tony Hinton explained the relevance of the new partnership with RACESAFE.

“Its no coincidence that we are holding this launch here at HART today.
HART is one of this country’s leading accredited providers of rider training, and we continually work on ways of reinforcing the safety message to new riders as they come through these doors and leave with a license or permit in their hand.”

Honda is also behind programs such as Honda SMART and Red Riders that are aimed at teaching young people about the importance of being safe on a motorcycle.

“Our campaigns don’t stop there,” Hinton said. “ATV safety is of the utmost importance as well, and as the market leader, Honda has taken that message on board devoting many resources to the “Stupid Hurts” campaign which targets those who work on the land.”

Hinton further noted that Honda is fully committed to safety whether that be on the road or on the track and are also in the business of supporting the motorsport industry in this country in the best way possible.

“Of course, I truly hope RACESAFE’s services aren’t needed! But there is no denying that racing is a dangerous sport at times,” he said.

“We do it because it is exciting, competitive, and allows us to test out our latest machinery in a controlled environment. Our riders put their all into this endeavour and as their mentoring manufacturer, we want to be confident that they will get the attention they need trackside should anything happen.”

Honda’s factory riders, Adam Fergusson, Josh Brookes and Judd Greedy also attended the launch to show their support of the vital services provided by RACESAFE.

“There is no way I would be back racing in this year’s Championship if it wasn’t for these guys,” Brookes said regarding his accident last year in Western Australia that left him with a fractured pelvis.

“Having a higher level of medical support gives all of us a little peace of mind when we’re out racing.”

Simon Maas, RACESAFE’s Chief of Emergency Services said they are “very much looking forward to Honda’s involvement.”

“RACESAFE could not function without the support of others. The doctors and nurses who staff the Team volunteer their time at each event which is an indication of how dedicated they are.”

“We are very proud of the kind of attention we can provide a rider, as well as our extremely quick response times. We got out to treat Josh within 22 seconds of him coming down.”

Maas explained that the organisation has modelled itself to some extent on what is going on in the U.S.A.

“We are fortunate to have such an incredible team of doctors, nurses, paramedics and drivers at our disposal as well as top of the line equipment. Basically, we have a scaled down, mobile trauma unit on site at each of these race events.”

Maas concluded by saying that RACESAFE is very grateful to Honda for agreeing to be a major sponsor for 2005.
