| Australia’s brightest road
racing talent Jason O’Halloran showed little respect for his
elders when he finished third overall in the first round of the
Oz Supersport 600 Series races at Phillip Island last weekend. The seventeen year old from Albion Park, near Wollongong, is determined to prove he can do better this year and seems to be on top of the injuries that plagued his first attempt at the series in 2004. Jason qualified third [1:38.882] to put his Joe Rocket Honda on the front row alongside just second qualifier and National champion Adam [Krusty] Fergusson [1:38.862] and Joshua Brookes on pole [1:38.798]. On Saturday, in the first of three races, young Jason almost took the lead into the first corner and then ran alongside number one plate holder ‘Krusty’ Fergusson in a race long battle for second place. On the last lap Jason made a desperate outside move on ‘Krusty’, only to come off second best when the more experienced reigning champion left Jason only the dirt to run up to the finish line. Clear winner was Josh Brookes, 5.817 seconds behind was Adam Fergusson and Jason O’Halloran 5.977 seconds behind the leader in third, making it a clean sweep for Honda. Later in the day Jason again made a good start in the five lap Supersport sprint, this time running second to come within 7-tenths of the leader Josh Brookes. On the last lap Fergusson slipped past O’Halloran into second place, Jason giving him a wide berth after their first race encounter and settled for third, and another 1,2,3, win for Honda. In the last Supersport race held on Sunday, Jason was mid-field into the first corner and only managed to get up to seventh, but still in the points to finish the round in third place overall with 54 points from ‘Krusty Fergusson on 66 points and round winner Josh Brookes who now leads the series with 76 points. The first round result was a good achievement for Jason O’Halloran on his near-stock Honda CBR600RR. The young rider seems to have benefited from his rigorous pre-season training program and continues to impress with his aggressive self-determination. Jason may only be on the HRC support team but that has not stopped him from improving every race and mixing it with the big boys. |
