Nova Honda Racing Winton Race Report

After a mid season break the Nova Honda Racing Team travelled to Winton raceway for round 5 of the Australian Superbike Championship. Our rider Shannon Etheridge was looking forward to another fast and furious weekend of racing at the Victorian circuit aboard the Nova Honda CBR1000rr.

Friday. Practice 1 was wet and Shannon was finding his way around in this session to be 12th fastest ( 1.43.51 ). Practice 2 saw Shannon improve his lap time by 1.5 secs ( 1.42.0) but dropped to 18th fastest after this session. The team was confident with the wet set up as Shannon's lap times kept dropping with every lap of the 30min session.

Saturday: Saturday Qualifying 1 was dry and the team with no testing before the meeting worked hastily to prepare the Nova Honda CBR1000rr for this crucial session as the weather was worrying all superbike teams. Shannon managed to muscle the CBR around the circuit in 1.27.1 to be in 18th position at the end of the session. The team needed to improve to get towards the front of the grid in the next qualifying session. Qualifying 2 started in fine weather and the team needed Shannon to head towards the front of the grid. Shannon slashed 2 seconds off 1.25.12 in this session to be in 11th place on the grid for Sundays 2 Superbike races.

Sunday: The team made a few changes to the set up overnight to try in warm up, but as the sky opened up overnight the team was unable to test the changes due to a wet track. Shannon went into race 1 hoping the changes improve the set up but this was not the case, Shannon ran off in turn 11 on lap 5, then returned to the pits.

Race 2 saw all superbike teams concerned about the weather with the track wet but drying, Shannon opted for the wet bike which was a gamble. Shannon made a great start to be in 7th position until the race was stopped due to a fallen rider. The team worked hastily swapping wheels during the stoppage ready for the restart. Shannon struggled with set up during the race to finish in 13th place.

Shannon being the youngest competitor at 18 in the superbike class is showing great maturity for his age and is now looking forward to round 6 at Queensland Raceway.
