| Red Bull KTM rider Anthony
West finished the opening qualifying for the Qatar Grand
Prix in 20th position in heat wave conditions at the Losail
Circuit today. It was a difficult day for the first appearance of the new KTM 250 machine at this 5.3 km circuit which typically offers low grip levels and narrow racing line. West suffered similar front-end problems to his colleagues in the KTM 125 squad and is hoping the team can find some set-up solutions for Saturday’s race. West set his fastest time on his 18th and final lap of this afternoon’s session as the track picked-up grip as riders swept it clean and laid down rubber. Today’s air temperature was 40 degrees with furnace like heat making riding a test of physical endurance. Anthony West #14 - Twentieth - 2’07.222 “Every time I try and push for a faster time and slide the front-end, it’s just pushing out in the corners. I had five big slides but luckily because it’s slippery here you have chance to pick the bike up with your knee, the slide goes for a long time -- otherwise you crash. I’m having a similar set-up problem to the 125 guys, so hopefully we find some answers. The bike is still down on top speed which is a bit frustrating on the long straight here.” |
