Red Bull KTM rider Gabor Talmacsi scored a career first victory in a dramatic finish to the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello today.

Talmacsi’s win was the first by a Hungarian rider since 1973 in the road race world championship.

The third member of the Red Bull KTM team, Julian Simon, finished in seventh place after a race long battle with Fabrizio Lai.

However while Talmacsi celebrated his teammate Mika Kallio was being treated in the medical centre following an horrific final corner crash.

Kallio was leading the race when he high-sided coming off the final curve and was hit by the closely following Aprilia ridden by Spaniard Hector Faubel.

Both Kallio and Faubel somersaulted violently into the gravel trap and were taken to the medical centre. Both riders were cleared of serious injury with Kallio being treated for concussion and bruising to his body, legs and right ankle.

Kallio had raced superbly from the start and led for 15 of 20 laps as he dominated the leading group that included Faubel, Thomas Luthi, Marco Simoncelli and Talmacsi.

Kallio looked set for his second win of the season as he led Faubel through the final corner when his race ended within sight of the chequered flag.

Talmacsi rode a well judged race to overcome early problems with a slipping clutch and the Hungarian charger started the final lap in fourth place behind Kallio, Faubel and Luthi.

With a superb move at the final corner Talmacsi raced around the outside of Luthi and then inherited the lead as Kallio and Faubel crashed in front.

Talmacsi’s victory took him TO third place in the world championship with 62 points while Kallio dropped to second, now eight points behind Luthi in the standings.

GABOR TALMACSI #14 - First - Championship: 3rd/ 62 points - “A very nice feeling to win my first grand prix but I’m a little bit lucky because Mika crashed while leading, right in front of me in the final corner. Just before that I had made a very good overtaking move on Luthi in the final turn. I made a good start but for about six laps I had problems with a slipping clutch but I pushed to stay with the leading group and was in a position to win. “

JULIAN SIMON #60 - Seventh - Championship: 8th/ 37 points - “I was fast at the start and was at the back of the leading group in seventh place but then I got involved in a big fight with Fabrizio Lai and we lost contact with the group. My bike was fast but I lost time passing and fighting with Lai, it was impossible to make up time late in the race.”

HARALD BARTOL - Managing and Technical Director - “I’m very happy for Gabor, he has been very fast and working hard since he joined the Red Bull KTM team this season. I’m glad that Mika is OK, it was a pity he crashed because he had ridden a very good race. “
