Kevin Curtain got away well from the front row and chased Fabrizio around the first few turns before getting the better of the Honda man and put in a big effort to try and pull away before the relentless Ten Kate onslaught worked their way forward from sixth and seventh positions on the opening lap.  Broc Parkes held down fourth place for the first lap before being pushed back to fifth by Foret but it wasn't long before both of those men became Ten Kate victims as Charpentier forged his way forward to third place and quickly closed onto the tailpipe of Fabrizio and easily passed the Honda and then took Kevin Curtain for the lead one corner later with such apparent ease that it looked clear that Charpentier would walk away with it from here.

Curtain had no answer for Charpentier but Fabrizio was determined to not let the Ten Kate man get away and pushed past Curtain for second. Fabien Foret had a moment somewhere and lost a number of positions which promoted Broc Parkes back up to fourth place and the Australian looked to be encouraged by that development and started to close a little on the leaders. Foret retired to the pits a lap later but came out again a little later to continue circulating albeit well out of the points.

Fabrizio failed to challenge Charpentier but at the same time Charpentier did not walk away from his pursuers and Curtain went past Fabrizio to have another bite at the cherry.

With eight laps to run Curtain made his move on Charpentier while his team-mate had inched closer to Fabrizio in an effort to mount a challenge for that final step on the podium.

Curtain hung onto the lead for a little over a lap before Charpentier took over up front once again while Broc Parkes was dealt a cruel blow by his Yamaha failing him which left Broc to limp back to the pits.  A nightmare finish to what was looking to be one of his best performances of the year.

Fabrizio could not match the pace set by Charpentier and Curtain and lost touch with the battle for the lead as the second half of the race unfolded.

Charpentier ran very wide into a right hander which gave Curtain another sniff at the lead but unfortunately it was not enough as Curtain lost the front trying to make his Yamaha match the pace of the Ten Kate Honda.  A disappointing end to what had been an extremely encouraging race for the Yamaha Germany squad and its Australian duo.

Curtain's demise meant that Charpentier could cruise home to a clear victory which extended his lead in the series out to 59 points over his team-mate Katsuaki Fujiwara who was absent from this race after crashing during practice at Suzuka the previous week. Curtain also of course took no points following his visit to the kitty litter but still holds down a highly creditable third place in the championship.

Gianluca Nannelli put in a great performance on the Ducati to clinch an impressive third place for the Italian manufacturer and its 749cc v-twin. British youngster Craig Jones did a great job standing in for Fujiwara on the second Ten Kate Honda to take sixth place.
