Again the front row got away cleanly and Noriyuki Haga led Andrew Pitt led the field through the first turns with Kagayama and Corser giving chase. In the first race it took some time for James Toseland to become a factor but the young Briton was aiming to change that this time around by taking fourth place off Corser prior to the end of the first lap and then slotted up to third place after dispensing with Kagayama. Race one winner Chris Vermeulen was running in seventh place just behind his team-mate Karl Muggeridge.

Toseland got second place from Andrew Pitt late on the next lap and started to close on to the tail of race leader Noriyuki Haga. Only 1.6 seconds covered the top seven after that first couple of laps.

James Toseland took the lead in the closing staged of the third lap and Chris Vermeulen had promoted himself from seventh to fourth place while Kagayama had slipped to seventh after making a small mistake.

Haga got Toseland back on the next lap for the race lead. Vermeulen had got the better of Andrew Pitt for third place and was working hard to try and chase down the leaders with his Ten Kate Fireblade proving too much for his Pirellis at various points of the circuit as he twisted the go grip a little too eager. Troy Corser started to pressure Andrew Pitt over his fourth place as the laps progressed.

Toseland again took the lead from Haga while Vermeulen had really started to close on the leading duo. Haga took the lead back a lap later, then the pair swapped places yet again a couple of corners later but then Toseland made a small mistake coming on to the main straight as they approached the halfway point of the race and Vermeulen was ready to pounce and did exactly that to promote himself in to second place and on to the back of Noriyuki Haga's Yamaha R1.

It wasn't long at all before Vermeulen took the lead from Haga and Toseland showed he was far from out of the hunt by taking second place from Haga and the pair started swapping places at nearly every turn which allowed Vermeulen to pull out nearly a second on his pursuers.

A couple of laps later Haga managed to get a couple of bike lengths on Toseland and started to try and reel Vermeulen back in. Corser finally got the better of Pitt for fourth place.

Haga took the lead from Vermeulen with four laps to run to set up what promised to be an exciting battle all the way to the flag between the duo as they had left Toseland behind looking to be out of a chance to fight for the win.

Vermeulen took the lead back with only one and a half laps to run but as they entered turn one for the final time Haga was almost alongside but the Honda man retained the advantage. Haga tried again a few turns later but again Vermeulen held him out but it was definitely going to go down to who got the best run the through the final turns and the best drive onto the main straight...

Vermeulen held on to it for the win to complete a double for the Ten Kate squad, the winning margin a slender 8-hundredths of a second. Toseland took the final step on the podium while Corser brought the GSX-R1000 home in fourth spot.
