No Fear Honda rider, Craig Anderson (CRF450) has taken the lead in the Nokia MX Nationals after defending champion, Daryl Hurley (RM-Z450) sustained a serious knee injury in the first moto of the eighth round of the series at Broadford on Sunday 9 July.

After winning the last four rounds of the Nokia MX Nationals, Anderson took the series lead at Broadford and now has a 25 point lead on Hurley. The Team Shift Motul Suzuki rider is seeking medical advice on the extent of his injury and if it will result in him being sidelined for the remaining two rounds of the motocross season.

However, even with Hurley out, the event was certainly not a walk in the park for Anderson, who battled through the two 30 minute motos to finish sixth overall after he sustained an injury to his hand in a practice accident two weeks ago.

A first corner incident added to Anderson’s woes as he fought his way from basically last on the track to finish fifth in the first moto. In the second race, the No Fear Honda rider finished in sixth position.

With championship front runners, Anderson and Hurley out of the way, Cody Cooper (CRF450)stepped up to the plate and after taking the point for the fasted time in qualifying came out firing to beat CDR/Nokia/Yamaha riders, Darryll King (YZ450F) and Cheyne Boyd (YZ450F) to the chequered flag in the first moto.

In the second moto, young-gun, Matt Moss (YZ450F) took his second hole shot for the day and lead the race until the 20 minute mark, when Kawasaki Racing’s, Daniel Reardon (KX450F)over took him for the lead and his first victory in the Pro Open class. Cooper and Boyd rounded out the top four.

Cooper’s first and third were enough for him to seal him the round victory ahead of Reardon and Boyd who finished on equal points, with the Kawasaki rider taking runner up for the day based on his position in the last moto.

In the Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites Championship, Motorex KTM rider, Ryan Marmont (KTM 250 SX) continues to hold the red plate for the series leader after claiming second overall at the Broadford track. Marmont now has a 27 point advantage over Cameron Taylor’s (YZ250F)292 series points with Troy Dorron (CRF250) just one point behind the defending champion.

The first moto of the eighth round of the Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites was won by Taylor who described the battle as the ‘perfect race’ in which he obtained a good start and after an aggressive move on Marmont was in second in the final stages of the race. With two laps to go, Taylor overtook Dorron for the moto victory.

The second moto was not as positive for Taylor who obtained a mediocre start due to his tyre choice. He was then slowed by other competitors who crashed on the Broadford track. With Taylor out of the way, Marmont and Dorron were left to battle it out with the Honda rider crossing the line in first position. Cody Mackie (KX250F) was third in the moto.

Dorron’s second and first ensured that he finished on top of the points table at the end of the day with Marmont and Taylor rounding out the top three for the round.

In the Motul National Cup, Tom Ovens continues to cement a strong lead in the championship with the Geelong based rider winning the round ahead of Kym Wright and Matt Ryan. Ovens now has a 24 point lead over Mark Grove who has 160 championship points in the development class. In his first year of national level racing, Jarrod Long continues to excel and is currently in third with 148 points.

Grove won the first race ahead of Ovens and with Joel Bellchambers rounding out the top three. Unfortunately, Grove was unable to repeat the form in the second moto, after he was involved in an incident which saw the race declared just short of the 20 minute mark. Kym Wright won the race ahead of Ovens and Ryan.

The final round of the Motul National Cup will be held at the final round of the Nokia MX Nationals at Coolum in two weeks time.

According to Kevin Williams, Nokia MX Nationals Series Promoter, the eighth round of the championship was one of the best in the 2006 season.

“The round has certainly been one of the highlights of this year’s calendar,” Williams said, “And despite the cold weather we had approximately 3,500 people attended the event and witness the dramatic action.”

“There are just two rounds remaining in the Nokia MX Nationals and with Hurley sustaining injury in the first moto, it certainly made for an exciting day. The racing was extremely competitive and entertaining and things are expected to step up again at the final two rounds of the series.”

The penultimate round of the Nokia MX Nationals will be at Barleigh Ranch Raceway on the 15 and 16 July. The following weekend the series winners will be crowned at Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Cody Cooper – Winner, Round Eight, 2006 Nokia MX Nationals
“When I win I want to win more. It makes me want to work harder and train harder so I can experience the feeling of being on the podium again.”

“My goal before the round was to finish on the podium at the end of the championship. Maybe now I might be able to get second, depending on what happens with Hurley. I’ve just got to go home and think about my goals before next weekend.”

Daniel Reardon – Runner Up, Round Eight, 2006 Nokia MX Nationals
“I’ve been waiting for a long time and have wanted a moto victory so bad. I’ve got a round victory before, but it’s good to finally have that race win under my belt.”

“I’ve got more confidence after today and let’s hope we can put it all together at Newcastle and do it again.”

Cheyne Boyd – Third, Round Eight, 2006 Nokia MX Nationals
“My speed is back to normal which is good. I changed my program as I had got into some bad habits. I knew I would go better this round as my speed was up during the week and I had a good time racing today.”

“I will do the same as I have been doing during the week and get in some good practice days and just keep changing it up.”

Troy Dorron – Winner, Round Eight, 2006 Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites
“I’m wrapped with today’s result. It is good to bounce back after last round - I set myself up for a good one. I really liked the track and I changed my bike a little bit between rounds.”

“I am determined to do well next weekend. I really like Newcastle and was unlucky not to win there last time we visited the track [round six]. I’m really looking forward to the event and hopefully getting another podium.”

Ryan Marmont – Runner Up, Round Eight, 2006 Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites
“It was my first time here [Broadford]and I loved it, the track was in excellent condition. Troy Dorron and Cameron Taylor had more experience at the track and it took me a while to get onto the right lines.”

“Going into Newcastle I feel really good. Everything is working well and I will just keep on riding all week in preparation for the event.”

Cameron Taylor – Third, Round Eight, 2006 Maxxis Tyres Pro Lites
“The first race [victory] was exactly what I wanted and needed, however, I couldn’t back it up in the second race and didn’t get a good start. I came out of the race with a bent clutch lever and was sixth, which meant I got points which is at least one positive.”

“I’m feeling confident that I can take a win at the last two rounds of the series. I only lost two points this week, but they were two points I couldn’t afford to lose – it is not over yet.”
