  • 1548 - Robbie Bugden up to third quickest now.  Jamie just got baulked by a backmarker on his quick lap, lots of fast boys out on a new tyre in the dying seconds of this session...
  • 1544 - Shawn Giles only did half a dozen laps this morning and has not ventured out this afternoon as he saves himself to try and score some points in the races to keep his championship hopes alive.  The Suzuki man suffering from a broken foot and troublesome hip injuries that are holding him back
  • 1540 - Shannon Johnson the first of the fast boys to better his time from this morning to promote himself one place up to fourth quickest with a 67.2.  Jamie is again the only man to put in a 66, a 66.75 to be precise, while his best effort this morning was a 66.58
  • 1530 - With 18 minutes remaining in this Superbike final qualifier Jamie's time from this morning is still by far the quickest.  Not sure if that was on a qualifier or not but Krusty remarked to me that his time that was good enough for second place on the charts this morning, half a second slower than Jamie, was on a race tyre
  • 1528 - While Dan Stauffer is far from happy one man that is at the opposite end of the happiness scale is Shannon Johnson.  Often quite an intense individual Shannon is looking happy and relaxed.  He commented to me this morning that he is really happy to be part of the Kawasaki Racing Team and gets on really well with all the guys and looks forward to each race weekend perhaps more so than he has ever done before
  • 1525 - While Jamie Stauffer has been on fire this year his brother and team-mate Daniel Stauffer has clearly been struggling.  While Jamie has found a set-up he likes with the Ohlins internals in the R1-SP Dan can't get to terms with them at all and is running standard fork internals.  When he runs the aftermarket race internals he has chronic pattering problems that they have been unable to cure.  As they are racing the SP he simply can't put last years forks on the bike and cure his woes that way but it is fair to say that while virtually everything is going right for Jamie, pretty much nothing is going right for Dan, and he's not happy.
  • 1521 - This weekend Scott Charlton is using a stock engine in his R1 after a recent engine failure destroyed his race engine. The interals are standard and the only power producing modifications are the pipes and power commander
  • 1520 - Superbike final qualifying is just getting underway now
  • 1508 - Kelly wins from McMartin, Van Rooyen, Roe, Childs, Henry, Marukic, Sutton, Smith, Collins and Bryan
  • 1505 - Mick Kelly looks safe to win this Pro Twins race, McMartin is chasing him but I don't think he will catch him.  Kelly had terrible luck with machine trouble at Wanneroo so it will certainly be a boost for the AAC team to get a win
  • 1452 - The only real battle in the 125cc opener was a busy fight for third place between Peter Galvin, Blake Leigh-Smith, Cath Thompson, Tom Hatton and Paul Campbell. Up front Brett Simmonds streaked away from the field to the tune of more than a second per lap. Tim Inkster was a safe second place throughout the race. Peter Galvin made a small break over his pursuers in the closing laps but Blake Leigh-Smith put in his best lap of the race on the final lap to steal that final step on the podium from Galvin

  • 1420 - Jamie has only done 7 laps in this session, Krusty only four laps. Bryan Staring had a low speed off on cold tyres in the morning session

  • 1406 - 20 minutes to run in Supersport final qualifying and it is Jamie on top again with a 68.58, just a couple of hundredths of a second off Krusty's qualifying lap record from last year which was a 68.55

  • 1328 - Last lap now and Andrews leads by five seconds on his 2004 GSX-R600
  • 1325 - Ian Andrews now enjoys a 4 second lead over Kokshoorn, Higgins is now leading that battle over third place
  • 1324 - The Phoenix Motorcycle Club are looking after us here at Mallala as usual. They always provide us a few drinks and a bit of food to keep us going over the weekend, which is more than we get at most places.  Winton always looks after us well too actually
  • 1320 - The first Superstock race is underway and local rider Ian Andrews was quick out of the blocks and had pulled a second over Anton Kokshoorn on the opening lap and then extended that to 1.7 seconds on lap two. Chris Trounson is holding down third place a couple of seconds further behind but is in a tight group of riders that includes Danny Higgins, Brad McConnell, Josh Houwen and Anthony Quinn

20 Paul RADFORD 1:13.448

  • 1246 - Flag is out to signal the end of the session
  • 1244 - Adam Fergusson down to 67.0, he has put 19 laps in.  Jamie is still circulating and has done 20 laps so far in this session, as has Andrew Stroud who is currently 11th quickest behind Josh Waters and ahead of Scott Charlton and the injured Shawn Giles. Giles came in after six laps and has not ventured out again
  • 1240 - That earlier 66.5 by Jamie is 4-tenths under the race lap record but a tenth slower than Adam Fergusson's pole time from last year
  • 1238 - Another interesting tidbit...  The custom race pipes on the Yoshimura Suzukis are made in the USA and not in Japan. They are custom built for the way Phil Tainton has tuned the engines and the latest pipes were first put on the bikes at Wanneroo.  Phil asked for Yoshimura USA to give him some pipes that make more power from 7000rpm up and they obliged, and I have to say they sound absolutely wicked.  And very different to anything else out there
  • 1235 - Shawn Giles is still on crutches nursing his broken foot but it is the major bruising and damage to his hip that is causing him most problems on the bike. He is unable to grip the bike between his knees as hard as he would like, and also the reduced power and leverage he has through his hip means that he can't correct the machine as strongly as he needs to do in order to be really competitive. Thus when the bike steps out he is hampered a little in his efforts to control it through the weakness in his hip.  He is still 13th quickest thus far though with a 69.4 the best thus far of his six laps.  Jamie Stauffer has put in the most laps thus far, he has 15 under his belt, that fastest 66.5 was set on his eighth lap
  • 1232 - I was wondering earlier today what the Robern Racing moniker on Russell Holland's bike represented, so I went and found it.  Apparently Robern is a large horse stables/trainers based in Caloundra (Qld) and the main man behind the operation just happens to be a motorcycle enthusiast. Good to see some out of industry money coming into our paddock, even if it is coming out of a horse paddock... And while our paddock has no horses, it sure has plenty of horsepower...
  • 1228 - Jamie just did a 66.5....
  • 1222 - Jamie Stauffer and Shannon Johnson the first men into the 67s. Holland joined them on his fourth lap, Jamie did a 67.2 on his third lap out
  • 1214 - Superbikes out on track very shortly for their first qualifier
  • 1213 - We looked at the difference between the Joe Rocket Honda men a few minutes ago so now lets look at the Yoshimura Suzuki men Shawn Giles and Robert Bugden. Here Shawn is the more aggressive rider on the throttle and backs he machine in a lot more than Robbie. Shawn goes through a set of back brake pads each race! In contrast Robbie uses very little rear brake and rolls the throttle on gradually, while Shawn backs it in, gets it turned and really nails the throttle hard. In some corners at some tracks Robbie will carry more corner speed than Shawn while using considerably less throttle...
  • 1208 - Results - Sidecar Q2 -
  • 1205 - Just been doing a little research about the riding styles of some of the riders.  In the Honda garage both riders run very similar suspension set-ups although Glenn Allerton's riding style is quite different than Adam Fergusson's. Glenn backs the machine more into the turns than Adam and often completely closes the throttle before hitting it hard on the exit, while Adam is smoother and more constant with his application of the throttle.  Glen often back the machine in so much that his rear wheel speed actually increases on the entry to a turn as the rear lifts from the deck. Adam runs his GPR steering damper in the middle range of it's adjustment while Allerton runs minimal damping, as did Josh Brookes last year
  • 1158 - FX Cup Final Qualifying on now, Superbikes are up after this for their first qualifier.  Conditions have fined up considerably here at Mallala, virtually no breeze at all, temp is up a little, track is completely dry
  • 1131 - Results - Twins Q2
  • 1127 - None of the Pro Twins riders improved on their times from yesterday
  • 1126 - Results thus far from this morning - Superstock Q2 - Naked Q2 - Supersport Q1 - 125 Q2 -
  • 1114 - Pro Twins our for their final qualifier. McMartin the quickest in this session thus far. The track is dry but conditions are far from ideal, though the wind has dropped to nil
  • 1104 - The 125 session just finished and the only one to improve on their position from yesterday is Cath Thompson who moved up to seventh quickest overall
  • 1042 - I have had discussions with a senior Motorcycling Australia representative, Daniel Hutchinson, here this morning and also with Road Race Commissioner Phil Tainton concerning the new class of racing being adopted in some states for twin-cylinder 650cc motorcycles. I impressed on them the fact that I think this class needs immediate direction from the top in regards to a standardised set of rules to be enforced Australia wide in order for this class to realise its true potential for growth. I see massive potential in this class which offers newcomers to racing a reliable machine that can be brought new along with spares easily accessed through dealers nationwide.  However, I do believe that a set of rules needs to be standardised urgently.  This will ensure riders do not spend money on excessive modifications, such as new forks etc., for them only to later find them banned under a set of rules that come down at a date in the future. This would help to ensure that riders do not go to great expense in modifying their machines in ways that eventually may rule them ineligible for competition.  I can see this class as the potential new starting point for riders nationwide, it would also be fantastic if the class could also enjoy a lower entry age than other classes of racing, much like 125 GP enjoys now.  Australian racing will always need a GP class, I see that as essential, but I do believe this new class for 650cc twins offers something different. A situation where anyone can buy a new machine, such as an SV650 Suzuki (which Australia are doing HUGE discounts on for people wishing to race them), and can realistically expect to be able to race it all year without having to do anything other than change the oil and take it to their dealer for an inexpensive valve adjustment every now and then. A class where crash costs are reasonable due to the lack of bodywork etc. However, in order for this class to be given a real chance of realising its potential I believe it needs immediate leadership and direction from the top. I plan to detail my reasons in a letter to Motorcycling Australia and the Road Race Commissioners late next week where I will urge them to take quick and decisive action in standardising the new class across Australia. I invite all interested persons to either email me at editor@mcnews.com.au with their thoughts, or they can air them publicly in the mcnews.com.au forum in our 'Oz Racing' section of the forum
  • 1037 - The Supersport session just ended with Fergusson on top with a 72.4 in the tricky conditions ahead of Allerton, Stauffer, Waters, Geronomi, Seaton, Smith, Staring, O'Halloran, Quinn, Clarke and Aitchison
  • 1022 - Light drizzle about, very light.  Clarke quickest in this session thus far but they are 12 seconds off a reasonable dry pace
  • 0959 - Supersports out next, and nobody is to eager to get out of pitlane.  The cloud is that low it seems as though the Mallala track is actually cloaked in it
  • 0954 - Still cold and foggy here but some riders still quick so track conditions obviously not as slippery as it looks. Rattenbury actually went a tenth quicker this morning but remains second on the grid behind Cartwright. Rattenbury was the only man to improve on the time he set yesterday thus the grid will be as per the ranking order in yesterday's first qualifier.  Slight drizzle just starting here now
  • 0942 - Nakedbikes on track now for their final qualifier.
  • 0940 - All times from yesterday can be seen by clicking on the links lower down this page in our Australian Superbike Navigation
  • 0935 - Superstock session just finished, at first glance it appears that as expected none of the top ten improved their time from yesterday. Josh Houwen was quick in this mornings cold conditions and went very close to the time he recorded yesterday which suggests that he will be very competitive in this afternoon's first race. The quickest man in the cold conditions this morning though was Anthony Quinn who went only a tenth slower than he managed yesterday. Darren Sciberras improved on his time from yesterday to move up to 13th quickest
  • 0927 - Most of the Superbike guys are having their spare bike prepared with a wet set-up, softer springs going in plenty of bikes right now. It is dry and cold at the moment but it looks to be only a matter of time before we get wet.
  • 0923 - Superstockers back on track now
  • 0920 - Just had a word with Glenn Allerton who only sports some minor bruising from yesterday's highside that knocked him out for a while.  He can't remember the incident but it was on his outlap and the Fireblade stepped sideways on him when getting on the gas and launched him into orbit. He is not 100% clear headed but will ride this morning to see if the computer inside his head is operating correctly enough to control a 200hp Superbike.  He will certainly get himself on the grid and even if he finds that he is a little bit muddy headed this morning there is every likelihood that he will be 100% tomorrow.
  • 0915 - Superstockers on the cold and slippery track now. I can't really see anyone improving on their times from yesterday in these conditions.  Red Flag is out to put a temporary halt to the session with 12 minutes remaining, a rider highsided out of the Northern Hairpin.
  • 0900 - First up this morning is Superstock Final Qualifying which is scheduled to get underway shortly.  A heavy downpour bucketed down earlier this morning but the track is mainly dry at the moment, but it's very cold and quite windy with a fair amount of fog hanging around.  In summary, it's quite a crap looking morning here at Mallala
