Team Report - Scott Charlton
|
| Scott headed to Winton for
Round 6 of the Australian Superbike Championship. The field
of elite riders dwindled as a number of the riders were
carrying injuries which prevented them from competing.
Unfortunately, Scott was not exempt from this, suffering two
fractures to his collarbone two days prior to the meeting.
Although in pain and not at full strength Scott was able to
race the 2nd last round. Scott had managed a two day test at Winton prior to the round and was quite happy with the set up of his machine. Throughout Fridays practice Scott assessed the effects of his collarbone injury and managed to pick up the pace by nearly two seconds between practice sessions and was placed 5th quickest. With a few minor changes to the bike setup on Saturday, Scott held a front row grid position through both qualifying sessions, but was pipped in the final minutes by seven thousandths of a second and relegated to position 5 on the grid. In Race 1, Scott managed a good start and was placed 5th on the first lap. Over the next four laps Scott had made his way through the field into 2nd place. Scott held a comfortable 2nd position for the following 8 laps and seemed to be riding the wheels off his Yamaha R1. On lap 12 with only 5 laps remaining, Scott ran slightly wide and lost the front, crashing out of the race with a broken foot peg. What was an absolutely outstanding effort and amazing ride to watch turned to devastation as Scott limped his machine back to the pits unable to continue the race. Thankfully the R1 was put back together and ready for Race 2. However, a poor start saw Scott fall back into 7th place on the first lap, setting him a mighty task of regaining some positions. Throughout the race Scott began to move through the field, taking two riders into one turn. An inspirational ride after the Race 1 crash saw Scott happy to settle for 4th place and just happy to bring the bike home in one piece. At the conclusion of Round 6, Scott has slipped back into 6th place in the Australian Superbike Championship, a mere 25½ points separating him from 3rd Place overall in the Championship. Scott continues to hold 3rd place in the Superbike Privateer Cup. Race coverage from Round 6 at Winton will be televised this Sunday 29th October 2006 on SBS from Midday. Scott will compete in the final round of the Australian Superbike Championship at Eastern Creek November 17 – 19 2006. |
