Team Report - Shaun Geronimi (Sydney Mesh Yamaha)

Team Sydney Mesh Yamaha Racing’s Shaun Geronimi has consolidated second overall in the YMF Loan Australian Supersport Privateers Championship after a character building, injury plagued round at a sunny Winton Raceway during round five last weekend October 20-22.

Shaun recorded two consistent, point scoring finishes in the Supersport legs consolidating his position as the number two Supersport privateer in the championship, behind Sydney Mesh & Steel team mate Jeremy Crowe.

Still suffering the after effects of the broken bones suffered at the previous round in Tasmania, Shaun struggled to ride the bike as he likes during Saturdays qualifying sessions – still - bettering his times from the recent test Shaun was determined to score points and keep his championship hopes alive.

The team, led by Dave “Radar” Cullen had the Sydney Mesh and Steel machine handling a treat making Shaun’s task over the weekend a lot easier, a 9th place in qualifying a good result under the circumstances and an outside position on the third row of the grid left Shaun confident for Sunday’s two 19-lap races.

Once again the meeting was dominated by Yamaha’s YZF – R6 with Yamaha Racing Teams Mark Aitchison (Yamaha Racing Team – YZF R6) taking his first pole position - and double race win of his career.

“I made a few little mistakes in the first session, I thought I’d go faster in the second – which we did but I still struggled with lines a bit.”

“I can’t fault the bike – its awesome, Radar has done a fantastic job as he always does, I’ll just change a few things in myself and we’ll go faster in the race”

Race one on Sunday morning was one of the best of the year with a huge freight train of bikes - up to 11 at one stage circulating the demanding Winton layout battling for championship points as the season reached this penultimate round.

Shaun was in the thick of the action dicing with factory Honda rider Glenn Allerton, Yoshimura Suzuki’s New Zealand Supersport Champion Craig Shirriffs and Kawasaki Racing Teams’ Josh Waters eventually finishing a fighting eighth.

“I got a great start but then ended up in a huge battle, by the time I got past the leaders had gone – but then halfway through the race my lack of fitness became an issue”

“All I’ve been able to do for the last couple of weeks is keep the foot up to try and get it better – all things considered it’s not a bad result”.

In the second race on Sunday afternoon Shaun got another good start from the third row of the grid holding down seventh at the end of the first lap.

Once again Shaun was involved in a race long dice with the same protagonists as race one but with fellow privateer Chris Seaton (Kawasaki) also involved in the action.

“Halfway through race two I was gone, I just had nothing left”.

“I really got to thank Radar and his Dyno and Shock Services, he’s the man on suspension by far, the bike was easy to ride and the Dunlop tyres were just brilliant, the bike was faultless all weekend”

Shaun now lies seventh in the in the 2006 YMF Loan Australian Supersport Championship, and second in the Privateers’ Championship heading into final round at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway November 17-19.

Shaun would like to thank all his sponsors that have made this weekend possible; Yamaha, Dunlop, Sydney Mesh and Steel, Dunlop Sportsbike tyre warmers, Radar’s shock service & Dyno, Penske, Elaine’s world of lights, Procycles, Motul, RK Chains, Racers Edge, Mark Briggden and Graham MacMillan Engineering.
