Team Report - Shaun Geronimi (Sydney Mesh Yamaha)

Team Sydney Mesh Yamaha Racing’s Shaun Geronimi had a tough weekend in the YMF Loan Australian Supersport Championship’s return to Sydney’s Eastern Creek for the final round last weekend November 17-19.

Shaun crashed out of both Supersport races on Sunday to end what promised to be a sensational season on a sour note.

Luckily Shaun escaped both crashes without injury and will be able to continue to train and re-gather the fitness lost after sustaining a foot injury at the Tasmanian round earlier this year.

Following on from a productive test at the Sydney circuit recently, Shaun ended the first of Saturdays qualifying sessions in fourth place, just over a second off provisional pole position – after being as high as third mid session.

Unfortunately a small technical problem prevented Shaun taking to the track for the second session held on Sunday afternoon, although the lap time posted in the morning session was still good enough for fifth position on the favoured side of the starting grid.

Qualifying was dominated by Yamaha’s new YZF – R6, filling the first five grid positions, all led Yamaha Racing Team’s Mark Aitchison.

“I did that time easy and thought I could have gone quicker in the afternoon but unfortunately we didn’t get the chance.”

“We’re confident for tomorrow, full credit to Dave “Radar” Cullen, he’s had a double Arthroscopy on his knees but he has still got the bike perfect – I can’t fault it at all.”

The first race of the day started well with Shaun slotted into a comfortable fifth position behind four other Dunlop shod Yamaha YZF-R6’s.

Whilst pushing hard to stay with the leading pack Shaun lost the front around the dauntingly fast turn 8, tumbling into the gravel trap uninjured – after setting what was to be the second fastest lap of the race.

“It all happened so quickly. I was pushing to stay with the leaders and the front just tucked – not being able to go out in that second qualifying session cost us, a lack of track time caught us out” said a disappointed Shaun.

Race two, held in front a huge crowd, was to provide further disappointment for the Sydney Mesh and Steel equip with Shaun once again sliding off unhurt whilst battling with the lead group of riders.

“Definitely a lack of track time caught us out, I was pushing the bike harder in the races than I had in qualifying and I think that just used a little more stroke in the suspension, it’s all we can put it down to.”

“It’s a bad way to end the season, everyone has put in so much work, Yamaha, Dunlop, Sydney Mesh & Steel and all my other sponsors, but also I’d really like to thank Radar and John for all their efforts throughout the year and also my wife Jo for her fantastic support.”

Shaun finishes a year that has been full of highs but has also experienced a few lows seventh outright and second in the 2006 YMF Loan Australian Supersport Privateers’ Championship behind Sydney Mesh & Steel teammate, and outright round-five winner Jeremy Crowe.

Shaun would like to thank all his sponsors that have made chasing this championship possible; Yamaha, Dunlop, Sydney Mesh and Steel, Sportsbike Tyre Warmers, Radar’s Shock Service & Dyno, Penske, Elaine’s World of Lights, Procycles, Motul, Goodridge, RK Chains, Racers Edge, NGK, AGV, Alpinestar, PPG, Mark Brigden Painting and Graham MacMillan Engineering.
