Jorge Lorenzo started from pole for the fifth time in the class and converted that start to lead De Angelis, Barbera and Dovizioso for most of the first third of the race but failed to break away from his pursuers until half race distance when he extended his advantage over De Angelis out to a full second and then started pulling away. Yuki Takahashi started from his best ever grid position after qualifying second and as they passed half race distance he was running in fifth place just ahead of Anthony West. Simoncelli, 125cc winner at Jerez for the past two years, was catching West to challenge for sixth place before falling with 8 laps to run. As the laps started to count down Hector Barbera was fighting over third place with Dovizioso. Barbera had not yet scored a podium finish since moving up to the 250cc ranks last year. Hiroshi Aoyama qualified seventh and was running seventh with 6 laps to run but then moved past West to take sixth position with 5 laps to run after the Australian ran wide in a left hander. Takahashi had sprinted away from West after taking advantage of the Australian's mistake and quickly closed on Dovizioso and Barbera to turn the battle for the final spot on the podium into a three way affair. The promising start to Westy's season soured with only a couple of laps to run when the Aprilia privateer entered pitlane to retire from the race after a broken spark plug sent his machine onto one cylinder. Lorenzo took victory to become the third youngest 250cc victor in GP history. Dani Pedrosa and Alan Carter are the only riders to take 250cc victories at a younger age.
