Australian privateer Ant West battled gearbox and engine problems before qualifying 14th for tomorrow’s sixth round of the 250cc motorcycle world championship at Mugello in Italy.

West, riding a non-factory Kiefer-BOS Racing Aprilia, secured a position on the fourth row of the grid for the Italian Grand Prix by clocking a best qualifying lap time of 1-minute 55.653-seconds around the 5.2km circuit.

The 24-year-old set the time on his 16th of 20 laps in today’s second and final qualifying session. The time was 2.939-seconds quicker than his best lap in yesterday’s first qualifying session when he was slowed by gearbox and engine problems.

Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo claimed pole position at Mugello with a lap of 1-minute 53.787-seconds on a factory Fortuna Aprilia.

Today’s race will be West’s 90th grand prix start in the 125cc, 250cc, and 500cc classes since 1998. He has recorded one victory, in the 250cc Dutch Grand Prix at Assen in 2003, and five other top-three podium finishes. West finished 11th in the previous round of this year’s 250cc world championship at Le Mans in France on May 21.

ANT WEST QUOTES: "I’ve been having problems shifting gears on this bike for a long time. It was the same yesterday (Friday) and the engine was also slow. I couldn’t do any fast laps because the bike wasn’t right. In qualifying today the gearbox and engine were better, and my lap times came down by almost 3-seconds. I wasn’t able to touch the suspension until I did some fast laps in qualifying today. The bike is pushing wide and I had difficulty holding the racing line in some corners. The rear grip is good, and hopefully we can improve the front in the warm-up tomorrow. If the race is wet I can be competitive, but if not then I’ll do the best I can and hopefully that will put me in the top 10 somewhere. My team are trying their best, but it’s only a small team.”
