Australian privateer Ant West won a lengthy battle against the factory Repsol Honda of Japan’s Shuhei Aoyama to claim eighth position in today’s 250cc Italian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Mugello.

West finished the sixth round of this year’s 250cc world championship in a time of 41-minutes 1.233-seconds on a non-factory Kiefer-BOS Racing Aprilia. He completed the 21-lap race 0.568-seconds ahead of Aoyama, who was ninth.

Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo won the race on a works Fortuna Aprilia, with West finishing 26.048-secs behind him. West scored eight world championship points for his result, which lifted him from 13th to 12th in the series with an overall tally of 27.

After qualifying 14th, West made a strong start and was eighth after nine laps, one place ahead of Aoyama. The Japanese rider passed West on lap 11 and remained ahead of the Gold Coast racer for three laps. However, West reclaimed eighth on lap 14 and held the position until the finish.

The result left West with a record of 66 world championship points-scoring finishes from 90 starts in the 125cc, 250cc, and 500cc grand prix classes since 1998. West has one victory and five other top-three podium results, all in the 250cc category, from those 90 grand prix starts.

The seventh round of this year’s 250cc world championship is at Catalunya in Spain on June 18.

ANT WEST QUOTES: "I had some problems with the bike in practice and qualifying, but it was better for the race. We tried some harder springs to put more load on the front wheel, and we decided to go with a harder front tyre for the race. These changes helped, although we are still down on power compared to the factory bikes. I had a long battle with (Shuhei) Aoyama. He kept passing me down the long straight, but I could him back under brakes. I pushed hard and made a small gap on him, and I was able to stay in front until the finish. I beat a couple of other factory bikes as well, and that’s always satisfying. I’m going to stay in Florence for a few days and then drive the motorhome to a beach in Spain, about 30kms north of Barcelona, and stay there until the next race.”
