Roberto Locatelli got a great run off the second row to take the lead into turn one with Debon and Dovizioso in tow. That trio had pulled a few bike lengths on fourth placed De Angelis.  Locatelli was shuffled back to third place on the second lap but came back at Debon on the next lap while Dovizioso took the lead.

It looked as though Dovizioso might be able to make a break from his pursuers but Locatelli had other ideas and chased the Honda man down and took the lead on lap seven of the 23 lap race.  Meanwhile Anthony West had worked his way into the top ten.

Before the halfway point of the race De Angelis joined the party up front.  Aprilia man Alex Debon was putting in a great showing in his 100th GP start running fourth place and battling with Jorge Lorenzo.

The fight for the lead then allowed Lorenzo and Debon start to close on the leading trio, with six laps to run Lorenzo was only 2 seconds behind the front running triumvirate and looking dangerous. Debon didn't look to have the speed to make any further forward progress however.

The Chupa Chup helmeted head of Lorenzo inched closer and closer to the front runners with every lap and with two to run the Spaniard arrived onto the tail cowling of De Angelis as the huge Catalunya crowd voiced their appreciated at the prospect of the battle for the win going down to the line between the four riders.

As they started the final lap Lorenzo forced his way up to second place in turn one while Locatelli was pushed out onto the marbles and lost touch with the riders he had been racing with for the whole duration of the race. Dovizioso had the advantage and it was clear an absolutely storming final lap for him to get the better of the Honda man. But it was a case of close but not close enough and Dovizioso went on to take his first ever 250cc class win to extend his championship lead out to 25 points over Lorenzo in the race for the title.
