Dovizioso led the field away with Lorenzo and Hirsohi Aoyama in pursuit. It only took a few turns for Dovizioso and Lorenzo to pull a few bike lengths out of their pursuers while De Angelis got the better of Aoyama to move up to third place. Lorenzo went under Dovizioso at the entry to Craner Curves in a very brave move to take the lead. On lap two Aoyama moved ahead of De Angelis again for third but didn't look to have the pace to stick with the leading duo. As the race progressed Lorenzo and Dovizioso continued to pull away from the field. Alex De Angelis and Hiroshi Aoyama waged a heady battle over third place and built a considerable advantage over fifth placed Locatelli. It looked as though Dovizioso would push Lorenzo all the way to the flag but early in the second half of the race he lost the front. The Italian managed to remount his Honda inside the top ten and quickly got back up to speed. But his demise had left Lorenzo all alone out in front while Hiroshi Aoyama and Alex De Angelis continued their battle, except with Dovizioso pushed down the other that battle was now over second place rather than third. Lorenzo went on to take the win by 7.4 seconds and celebrated with a mono the length of the Donington pit straight. De Angelis won his battle with Hiroshi Aoyama to take second place while Dovizioso salvaged sixth place after his earlier fall. Anthony West took another top ten finish on his privateer Aprilia to retain his place in the overall championship top ten.
That sixth place was enough for
Dovizioso to retain his championship lead over Lorenzo but the
gap had been narrowed down to only a single point. |
