| Troy Corser rolled into pole position
late as the grid formed up for the start but he certainly wasn't
the last one away as the Suzuki man led the field through turn
one ahead of James Toseland, Karl Muggeridge, Noriyuki Haga,
Troy Bayliss and Andrew Pitt. Haga squeezed underneath Muggas
halfway around the first lap to take third place before setting
his sights on Toseland. Meanwhile up front Corser was
pulling away and by the end of the first lap the Suzuki man had
nearly a second on the Ten Kate man. Toseland was not content to let Corser get a gap however and he put his head down to reclaim some of that early lost ground and by lap four he was only a couple of bike lengths behind and coming along for the ride was Noriyuki Haga. The Yamaha man was all over the back of Toseland but nearly went highsiding over the bars after his R1 snapped violently sideways out of a tight right hander which lost him a couple of bike lengths on Toseland. Lap five saw Toseland take the lead for the first time. A couple of laps later Haga took second place from Corser but the Suzuki man came right back at him while Muggeridge and Bayliss looked on from close astern. Corser eventually managed to pull away from Haga allowing him to concentrate his efforts on chasing down Toseland who had managed to eke out a small advantage while Corser had his hands full with Haga. As the race entered its second half Corser was right on the tail of Toseland. Haga remained third while Muggeridge and Bayliss commenced battle over fourth place with the newly crowned reigning World Champion putting an aggressive inside move on the Queenslander. A few corners later Muggas made an effort to get back past but had his nose wiped by Bayliss with Muggas front wheel being clipped which made him stand his machine up and he lost a lot of ground on Bayliss as a result. Bayliss was unfazed by the incident and immediately got on terms with Noriyuki Haga and was looking for a way past the Yamaha man. Lap 13 Bayliss made his move to take third place while up front it was still Toseland and Corser running in tight formation with a 1.5 second buffer over the Ducati man. It only took Bayliss a couple of laps to add his number to the leading pair to make it a Honda-Suzuki-Ducati triumvirate. Bayliss took second place from Corser on lap 18 and the pair swapped back and forth for a while until the Ducati man decided he was ready for his next tussle and that was with race leader James Toseland. The newly crowned World Champion looking a lot more comfortable with the front end of his Ducati in this second encounter. Toseland was not making things easy for Bayliss and at one stage Bayliss nearly ran into the rear of the Honda on the entry to one of the turns and had to take evasive action which cost him a couple of bike lengths. But Bayliss immediately reclaimed that ground and then took the lead but only a few corners later Bayliss got shuffled back to third as both Toseland and Corser squeezed past as things really began to hot up at the front of the field. The trio traded places and paintwork time after time in the closing laps but with two laps to go Bayliss managed to get a couple of bike lengths on his pursuers who continued to trip each other up in their tussle. Bayliss took a strong win with a dynamite final couple of laps while Corser managed to win the battle for second place and that 20 points was enough to promote him past Barros and Pitt in the series standings to secure fourth outright for the season. Toseland's third place was enough to secure second in the series ahead of Noriyuki Haga who could not run with the leading trio in this final bout of the season. A thrilling end to a great season and things should shape up even better in 2007 with plenty of seat swapping and new blood in the series. Corser on a Yamaha, Biaggi joining the series after a year in road racing exile onboard a Suzuki. Steve Martin finally gets a 1,000cc machine after spending the last few years with a major horsepower handicap on the Foggy Petronas machines. Josh Brookes swapping from a Kawasaki that has never been competitive back to the Honda stable where he enjoyed his previous domestic success and wildcard Supersport win. Barros rumoured to be onboard a Ten Kate Fireblade for 2007.
