1713 - Aussie Superstock
Final Qualifying session has 5 minutes to go and the current
order is - Trounson - Higgins - Bonthorne - Broadfoot -
Kokshoorn - Cowie - Sciberras - McLinden
1710 - Alex Barros quote
after first qualifying - "The team is working very good and
I understand the bike better every day. We will be more
competitive as we move forward. Because we have had no tests
before Qatar and Australia we are playing catch up and
thanks to this good weather we have had a very good practice
today. We have had such a great improvement in
comparison to Qatar because we have tested new things on the
bike today and tomorrow we will work on the tyre duration
(life) and on the bike some more."
1705 - Troy Bayliss quote
after first qualifying - "Things went well this morning for
the first exit, and I expected to go quite a bit faster in
the second session but actually in the end the track was
quite hot and a bit slower and I only bettered the time by a
tenth of a second. I stayed out and did ten laps on
the race tyre and my second last lap was only two-tenths off
my best. So it all went quite well but took a little while
to get going, then in the end it all came together. We'll
see how tomorrow goes, we've got second qualifying first
thing in the morning, when it'll be cooler and I think it's
going to be better. I didn't know Alex was behind me,
which was when he did his time, but I know he is going to be
coming in the future anyway, that's no problem. All I
know is that I was consistent on my race tyre and that's the
main thing at the moment. At the end of the session the guys
thought I was only going to do 3 or 4 laps to see how the
bike was, but it was feeling really good so I ended up doing
10 and ran out of petrol on the way into Honda Corner but
luckily I could roll all the way back to the pits!"
1700 - Steve Martin quote
after first qualifying - "The track is definitely a lot more
slippery than at the test so it is difficult to do the same
sort of times. The wind has been up and changing direction
all day and our bike seems to be sensitive to which way the
wind blows here. We still have a fair bit to try and see if
we can eke out a few tenths because it is so tight at the
top. I did a good run of consistently good lap times and I
am concentrating on setting the bike up for the race, not
for qualifying."
1657 - Karl Muggeridge
quote after first qualifying - "We just started off on the
wrong leg, just racing, racing around to try and get
everything sorted out. I'm putting too much pressure on
myself to try and get it right, rather than being calm. So I
made too many mistakes and not getting things right. It's a
little bit foreign at the moment so I just need to get it
settled down. It'll work out for sure."
1655 - James Toseland
quote after first qualifying - "We stuck a new tyre in the
bike near the end and still did a pretty decent time. This
tyre was spinning towards the end a lot more than the others
so I think if we had the same tyre in the rear as we had
earlier we could have challenged even more. The power of the
Honda is awesome now so we need to try and get as much grip
as we can. It's no good to have this power and just get it
spinning. But the bike is good, and I'm happy that I'm
riding consistently."
1651 - Superstockers on
track now for their final qualifier
1636 - Bugden up to 4th
now after putting in a 1m36.1. Giles is down to
1m35.15 to increase his gap at the top of the table
1628 - A little over 10
minutes to run and the status quo remains
1623 - Allerton up to 5th
quickest pushing Bugden back to 6th. Etheridge up to 7th
pushing Dan Stauffer back to 8th. Order at the top remains
the same
1616 - Aussie Superbike
Final Qualifying well underway now, 22 minutes left in the
session, current order is Giles (1m35.60), Fergusson
(1m35.68), J Stauffer (1m36.05), Holland (1m36.22), Bugden
(1m37.76), Allerton (1m37.81), D Stauffer (1m38.65),
Etheridge (1m38.68)
1605 - Aussie Superbike
Final Qualifying underway in five minutes
1551 - 7 minutes remaining
now and it is Jamie Stauffer from Fergusson, Aitchison,
Greedy, Waters, Staring, Allerton, O'Halloran
1548 - Pictorial -
Gallery D
- More pit images from today
1546 - 13 minutes
remaining in this session and in this session only the order
is Stauffer, Aitchison, Waters, Allerton, Staring, Greedy,
Fergusson, O'Halloran.
1538 - This session is 30
minutes long as are all the Aussie Support event final
qualifiers this afternoon
1537 - Jamie Stauffer the
top man now, 1m38.446
1536 - Aitchison on top
now with a 1m38.49
1534 - Both Joshua Waters
and Chris Seaton had engine failures this morning but
Seaton's was the most spectacular as his Kawasaki trailed a
huge plume of smoke after it let go
1533 - Australian
Supersport Final Qualifying on now and it is Jamie Stauffer
the early leader on 1m39.49 but that is early days yet and
the boys will go much quicker than that.
Times
from first qualifying are here
1515 - Toseland has pushed
Corser back to fourth spot...
1511 - Corser back out
now, all the top ten are on track for a last crack at taking
top spot but lots of traffic on track
1509 - Lots of traffic on
the track now but Bayliss is back on track and going for it
by the look of his body language. Barros has headed
out now and Toseland also back on track. Corser will
be heading out soon no doubt...
1508 - Lorenzo Lanzi is
smoking the Ducati around Phillip Island but it is not
translating to laptimes as the factory Ducati man is nearly
two seconds slower than his team mate Bayliss who sits atop
the charts on 1m33.387. Barros, Corser and Toseland
all in the pits, presumably for new rubber as this session
winds down
1507 - 7 minutes remaining
and the order is - Bayliss - Barros - Corser - Toseland -
Kagayama - Haga - Walker - Clementi - Muggeridge -
Neukirchner - Martin - Rolfo
1503 - Bayliss improves
with that lap down to a 1m33.387. On the next lap he
ran on at turn four and took the escape road exit (We found
out later this was due to running out of fuel)... Troy will
no doubt be in the pits for a new tyre when he comes around
to the pit entry. 10 minutes to run...
1502 - Bayliss still
3-tenths under at second split.... Toseland lost a fair bit
of time in that sector
1501 - Bayliss about to
smash that.... 4-tenths under at the first split this time
around... Toseland on a flyer too....
1500 - Bayliss under at
the second split... And goes fastest now with a
1m33.698
1458 - Toseland looking to
be quickest this time though... Under at first AND second
split... But no loses time in the final sector and
only puts in a 1m34.1 Kagayama up to fifth and going
well now, Walker sixth, Haga seventh, Clementi eighth,
Martin ninth, Rolfo tenth
1457 - Toseland on a flyer
again now... A tenth under at the first split...
Loses a few tenths in the middle of the lap though.
Bayliss heading out of pit lane again. Barros back on
track also. All the top four are currently on track
and circulating. 16 minutes to run
1454 - Toseland up to
fourth quickest with a 1m34.08. 20 minutes remaining
1453 - Toseland on a flyer
now, currently sixth but on the pace at the first split...
1452 - Corser under at the
first split this time around... Fairly level at the
second split... Fails to go quicker
1451 - Bayliss again under
at the first split... Corser pretty much on the split
pace... Neither rider improves
1450 - Bayliss under at
the first split... Loses a couple of tenths in the second
split... Doesn't improve
1449 - Corser back on
track now after a long time in the pits
1448 - Bayliss back out
now
1446 - The top three,
Barros, Corser and Bayliss, are all currently in the pits
1445 - The Petronas boys
still having trouble keeping their engine temperatures under
control with a track temperature at the moment of around
56°C
1444 - Haga up to fourth
quickest now to give Yamaha fans something to get excited
about
1443 - Bayliss very fast
at the first split this time around... Barros still on it
too.. But then they both enter pit lane after both
going under at the first split...
1442 - Barros doesn't
improve his best time but Bayliss does to a 1m33.911 but
still only good enough for third quickest and the Brazilian
tops the charts in front of the two Aussies. Clementi a
surprise fourth quickest after an off earlier in the
session.
1441 - Barros is behind
Bayliss on the track as the pair continue to set the pace...
Both under at the splits....
1440 - Barros on top now
with a 1m33.790. Corser still second, Bayliss third.
Barros and Bayliss both on another flyer now...
1439 - Bayliss and Barros
both on flyers now and both under at the first split....
Both still under at the second split...
1437 - Bayliss a tenth
under at the first split this time around again... And again
drops a little in the second sector but only 8-hundredths
off Corser... Loses more time in the final sector this
time around and fails to improve.
1436 - Bayliss on a
flyer... Under at the first split... Loses a little time in
the second sector but only 2-hundredths behind Corser at
this point... Loses more time on the final sector to go
through with a 1m33.963 to improve his time but fails to
knock Corser off the top spot
1431 - While this morning
the wind was blowing mainly down the straight it has now
reversed direction and is blowing up the straight and as
such top speeds are appreciably down. Corser is yet to crack
300kph in this session. Rolfo and Xaus have the
highest top speeds thus far in this session with 307kph
although they are only 9th and 15th respectively on the time
sheets.
1430 - Corser out and
trying now, Chili has tucked in behind him to try and follow
1419 - Corser just ran off
but rejoined the circuit okay
1418 - Corser first man in
the 1m33s
1415 - World Superbikes
heading out for their first qualifier now
1349 - 10 minutes
remaining in this session and the order is - Charpentier
1m35.86 - Parkes 1m37.11 - Curtain 1m37.24 - Sanchini
1m37.86 - Sofuoglu 1m38.02 - Tiberio 1m38.05 - Thomas
1m38.24 - Gobert is 11th on 1m38.61 and Brookes is 16th on
1m39.01. Things should hot up at the top of the table
in this final ten minutes
1336 - Charpentier on a
real flyer now... 1m35.869 to Charpentier, 1.3 seconds
quicker than anyone else with 22 minutes remaining.
Parkes is second quickest on 1m37.11 and has the highest top
speed at 276kph
1330 - World Supersport
First Qualifying well underway now with nearly half an hour
remaining. Current state of play has Charpentier on
top from Parkes, Curtain, Sofuoglu, Fores, Sanchini,
Veneman, Thomas, Harms, Tiberio.
1256 - Pictorial -
Gallery C - More pit images from Phillip Island
1254 - Five minutes left in Aussie Superstock qualifier
and it is Trounson on top with a 1m44.5 from Bonthorne,
Higgins, Nicholson, Broadfoot, Baker, Mather and Kokshoorn
1200 - Dying seconds of the session now and the current
order is Aitchison, Fergusson, Staring, Greedy, Allerton,
Waters, Stauffer, O'Halloran
1156 - Aitchison to the top of the timesheets now
(1m38.93) followed by Fergusson (1m39.29)
1155 -Staring on top now (1m39.37) from Fergusson
(1m39.39), Aitchison up to third (1m39.46), Greedy up to
fourth (1m40.06), Allerton next best on 1m40.19.
1153 - Well the Michelin boys are out to take part in
qualifying at least, still to be seen whether they race or
not... Fergusson quickest with six minutes to go in
this first 20 minute session (1m39.39) followed by Staring
(1m39.61), Waters (1m40.34) and Jamie Stauffer fourth
quickest (1m40.34). We believe the Michelin boys will
be on their 2005 homologated front and 2006 homologated rear
but as no 2006 fronts have arrived in time due to a shipping
delay in Europe then the situation is far from clear.
1135 - Australian Supersport First Qualifying up next, a
20 minute session.
1129 - Flag about to come out to signal the end of the
session...
1127 - Bayliss back in the pits
1126 - Bayliss just missed out on better his time, a
1m34.52 that time around not up to his best of this session
(1m33.48), but he did set a new fastest top speed for the
day thus far with 313kph. Walker and Toseland back on track.
Only a few minutes remaining...
1125 - Abe has put in the most laps thus far at 24 but
has only managed to be 18th fastest with 1m35.61.
1123 - Bayliss back on track. Walker, Toseland and
Corser all in pit lane
1118 - Bayliss and Walker both in the pits, this pair
lead the timing sheets with 10 minutes to run
1113 - Bayliss loses a little time in the final sector
once again to go through with a 1m33.63. Toseland lost
a little time on the second sector on the current lap after
putting in a great first sector
1112 - Bayliss under his best by a tenth at the first
split... Walker up to second quickest with a
1m33.75...Toseland on a flyer too... Bayliss still under at
second split...
1111 - Bayliss quicker again at the first split this
time around... Toseland up to second quickest with a
1m33.95... Bayliss bang on his earlier time at the second
split.... Goes through with a 1m33.59, a tenth slower than
his previous effort.
1110 - Bayliss on top now, 1m33.4, now things are
getting a little more serious... 19 minutes to run
1109 - Pictorial -
Gallery B - Pit images from Phillip Island
1108 - With a bit over 20 minutes remaining in this
first practice session Corser's early 1m34.18 is still the
quickest. Bayliss has put in a 1m34.30, Haga a
1m34.48, Toseland 1m34.53, Lanzi 1m34.57, Laconi 1m34.71,
Nieto 1m34.83, Martin 1m34.88, Kagayama 1m35.15 and Pitt
rounds out the top ten with a 1m35.43.
1054 - Neukirchner just went for a tumble but is up and
okay. Order at the top remains the same.
1045 - Top five with 45 minutes to run - Corser (1m34.1)
- Bayliss (1m34.4) - Haga (1m34.4) - Lanzi (1m34.5) -
Toseland (1m34.7)
1040 - Most riders in pit-lane making changes
1038 - Corser going quicker again at the first split...
Lost a couple of tenths in the second split though... And
goes through with a slower 1m34.5 that time around
1037 - Corser quickest now with a 1m34.18. The Suzuki
also quickest down the straight with TC hitting 312 on that
lap
1035 - Bayliss and Haga first men in the 1m34s, not long
before we have a swag of them in the 1m33s I expect.
1034 - Bayliss already on his third lap now, this will
be a 1m34 from the splits
1032 - The Kawasaki is very fast in a straight line as
Chris Walker on his first lap recorded 305kph down the
straight! What speed are we going to see when they are
up to full pace....?
1029 - World Superbikes about to head out of pit lane
for their first practice session
1015 - Charpentier on top with a few minutes remaining
in this session, fastest by far with a 1m36.2 but still a
second away from the time Chris Vermeulen set here in 2003.
Parkes second quickest (1m37.0) then it is Curtain, Thomas,
Harms, Gobert, Sofuoglu, Tiberio, Sanchini, Veneman. Brookes
15th (1m39.4). Only a couple of laps left in this session
0959 - In trying to get a feeling with the Ducati that
he is happy with Josh Brookes is trying some settings very
different than those normally used by Ohlins and Ducati on
their supersport machines. He is up to 10th now with a
1m39.7 but that is still a few seconds away from what he has
done here on his domestic specification Honda. Early
days yet and Josh did work in a suspension shop for a few
years early in his career and thus should have an idea of
directions to take with suspension settings and it will be
interesting to see if he has enough time during this
weekend's practice and qualifying sessions to get the right
ingredients for a good recipe that will bear competitive lap
time fruit.
0955 - Parkes on top now with a 1m37.03.
0954 - 25 minutes remaining in this session now and
Curtain's early 1m37.2 still on top of the charts from
Charpentier (1m37.8), Parkes (1m37.9), Gobert (1m39.4),
Thomas (1m39.6). Most of those times wouldn't even get the
riders on to the front row at a domestic Australian
Supersport round ahead of privateers so there is plenty more
to come speed wise from these boys today.
0940 - Curtain and Parkes the early pacesetters as
riders slowly work up to speed. Curtain put in a 1m37.2 on
his fourth lap but it won't be long before we see 36s in
this session if conditions prove favourable.
0937 - World Supersport bikes on track now for first
practice. Lovely blue skies, nice temperate conditions but a
fairly stiff breeze blowing down the main straight.
This will help riders down the straight but can run them
wide a little at turns 1 and 3.
0935 - The first piece of drama to unfold at Phillip
Island this weekend unfolded in the Aussie Supersport
paddock that are here to participate in support races this
weekend. Michelin have failed to get the homologated front
tyres for the 2006 season here for their riders (Fergusson -
Allerton - Staring - Waters etc.) in time for this weekend
and as such these riders do not have a tyre that is legal to
ride on under Australian Supersport rules. Honda have
proposed to race anyway as this is a non championship round
etc. but organisers have said that if they race they must
start from the back of the grid and take a 30 second
penalty. Obviously the Michelin runners are none too
pleased but that is to be expected and they also can't
expect to race on a non homologated front tyre. What
is our expectation of how it will unfold....? I don't
think we will see any Michelin runners take part in the
Australian Supersport support races this weekend.
0925 - Welcome to our live page direct to you from
Phillip Island. If you are not familiar with this
service it may be time to give you a quick run down on what
goes on. This page will refresh in your browser every
45 seconds. During the day we constantly post new details on
this page of any happenings going down at the track and
links to all results etc. after each session. There will be
quiet times when nothing newsworthy is happening but if you
stay on this page you will be the first to know anything of
note that does happen. Simple really. The World
Supersport machines head out on track at 0935 for their
first 45 minute practice session before the World Superbikes
hit the track for their first practice at 1030. -
