A number of riders went down towards the back of the field at turn one but the top runners all made it through okay but Barros' did lose time avoiding the carnage.

The usual suspects, Bayliss and Corser, were immediately up front with Haga and Muggeridge for company.  A few laps into the race James Toseland had the rear of his Honda step sideways and had to get out of the throttle but unfortunately Yukio Kagayama was right behind and touched the rear of the Ten Kate Fireblade which sent the Suzuki man over the bars. He walked away seemingly uninjured which was simply amazing.

Muggeridge and Haga both got the better of Corser for a few laps while Bayliss started to eke out a lead. Corser got back past Muggeridge and then locked horns with Abe. The Yamaha man was at his spectacular best, smoking his R1 out of nearly every turn.

Barros got the better of Muggeridge for fourth place as the race approached its halfway stage. He then started to close down Corser and Haga. Toseland managed to take fifth place from Muggeridge on lap 10 of the 18 lap encounter and the Australian then came under attack from Regis Laconi and Andrew Pitt.

Barros got on terms with Corser and Haga on lap 12 to make the battle for second place into a three way affair.

Three laps later the Brazilian won that battle for second place and it looked as though he might be able to break away. But only half a lap later both Corser and Haga put themselves in front of the Honda again.  Another half a lap and Barros was back leading the group again, the vocal Italian crowd voiced their appreciation of the great battle with plenty of cheers.

Toseland was trying to get on terms with the men battling for second but a mistake under brakes saw him run in too deep and end up in the gravel trap where both himself and his Fireblade were somersaulted end over end. It was a big tumble and while the Brit walked away he was clearly a little shaken and no doubt will be sporting plenty of bruises.

Bayliss went on to the win unchallenged to make it four in a row for the Ducati man. The sprint to the line for second place was extremely close but it was the Fireblade of Alex Barros that crossed the line for second while Corser rounded out the podium. Four different manufacturers in the top four again with the finishing order, Ducati, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha.
