Troy Bayliss and Noriyuki Haga got away well with Karl Muggeridge and Troy Corser on their tails. Haga led Bayliss around the first laps while Karl Muggeridge came under attack from Troy Corser and James Toseland. Corser got the better of Muggeridge and closed onto the tail of Bayliss and Haga. A couple of laps later Toseland sneaked past Muggeridge and closed on Corser to make the battle for the lead into a four way affair and they started to pull away from Muggeridge. On lap five Muggeridge race ended but it wasn't clear whether his exit was through a mechanical failure or riding error. A lap later Michel Fabrizio lost the front and slid off into the kitty litter. Bayliss was all over Haga but in a very unusual state of affairs the Yamaha actually appeared to be putting the power down better than the Ducati. Bayliss did manage to sneak ahead at times but never for long as Haga always came right back at him. As the laps progressed the leading duo started to pull away from Corser and Toseland. James Toseland had got the better of Corser and the Suzuki man couldn't hack the pace and lost touch with the Briton. In contrast Toseland got quicker as the laps progressed and pulled away from Corser and closed in on Bayliss and Haga. As the race entered its second half both Bayliss and Toseland slipped past Haga and it looked as though Bayliss would pull and escape act. Andrew Pitt passed both Corser and Kagayama to move up to fourth place and seemed to be more comfortable as the laps counted down. Toseland managed to escape from Haga in the latter stages of the race but couldn't get close enough to challenge Bayliss who took a clear win. Toseland a well deserved second place from Haga while Andrew Pitt came home a strong fourth. Kagayama got the better of his team-mate to take fifth place.
