2006 Superbike World Championship - Round Eight - Brands Hatch, Great Britain - August 4/5/6 - Coverage by MCNEWS.COM.AU |
| Troy Bayliss got the holeshot with
Haga, Muggeridge, Corser, Toseland and Kagayama all in hot
pursuit. After a few laps the chief protagonists had established
themselves as Bayliss, Haga and Muggeridge in that order while
Toseland tried to give chase. Just when it looked as
though Muggeridge might have some luck go his way for a top
result he made a small mistake that put him a few millimetres
too close to the kerb on the apex of a right hander which saw
him lost the front off and skittle off into the kitty litter.
Haga took his turn to lead the race on lap seven with a nice move up the inside of the Ducati into Clark Curve. Corser was closing in on Toseland and the pair were battling only a second behind the leading duo. Toseland and Corser were right on the tail of Bayliss and Haga by lap nine of the 25 lap race and Bayliss had reasserted his position at the front of the pack. As the race entered its latter half Bayliss and Haga stretched away again while on lap 19 Andrew Pitt got the better of James Toseland for third position and immediately pulled away from the Ten Kate man. Things were far from settled up front between Bayliss and Haga however with the Yamaha man sneaking into the lead again with three laps to run. Bayliss tried everything to get past Haga on the final lap but the Yamaha man kept his nose in front to take his first win of the year to make it two wins this year for Yamaha. Bayliss a bike length behind in second place with Pitt only a couple of seconds behind in third place. Regis was the top finishing Kawasaki in fourth place ahead of James Toseland and Troy Corser. Haga's win promoted him past James Toseland in the championship chase but at the top of the charts it is still Troy Bayliss that rules the roost with a 77 point advantage over his closest challenger. Bayliss went into this round with a 73 point lead so will be satisfied with improving that advantage by a further four points. The Superbike World Championship now suffers through a month long hiatus before battles recommences at Assen on September 3. With only four rounds remaining in the series it seems that the only thing that could stop Bayliss from taking the #1 plate this year would be a significant injury. A fate that nobody would wish on the Australian.
