Jones bounces back to win second Superbike bout at Morgan Park

After a mechanical DNF in race one, Mike Jones (Yamaha Racing Team) needed to bounce back in style during the second and final SW-Motech Superbike bout of the weekend at Morgan Park — and he did exactly that.

Starting on his spare bike after his team failed to fully diagnose the electrical issue from earlier in the day, Jones lined up knowing that nothing less than a win would suffice to keep his championship hopes alive.

As the lights went out just before 1500, Josh Waters (McMartin Racing Ducati) got the holeshot and led into Turn 1, with Jones in close pursuit. Anthony West (Addicted to Track Yamaha) slotted into third, ahead of Jack Favelle, Broc Pearson, Jonathan Nahlous, and Cam Dunker.

But West was quick to pounce, overtaking Jones on the opening lap to move into second.

Out front, Waters took advantage of clear air to start building a gap, while West had a moment with a big rear slide on Lap 3, allowing Jones to reclaim second.

Once in clear air, Jones began to reel in Waters, setting a 1m12.335s to close the gap from eight-tenths to six-tenths… then three… and then nothing. With ten laps to run, Jones was swarming all over the back of the Ducati.

Meanwhile, the battle for third had heated up. Jack Favelle muscled past West to take the position with nine laps to go, while Pearson and Dunker began closing in to form a tight group of five riders in pursuit of the final podium place.

At the front, the contrast was stark — Waters sliding the rear and lifting the front as he defended the lead, while Jones looked calm and composed, gliding smoothly around the 2.96km circuit.

With six laps remaining, Jones showed a wheel but bided his time, possibly letting Waters burn more tyre life before making his move. That move came with four laps to go, and when it did, Jones didn’t look back — immediately dipping into the 1:12s and pulling clear.

Waters, recognising the championship picture, didn’t chase too hard. Second place would still be enough to secure him the round win and preserve his handy lead in the title race.

Jones crossed the line with a three-second margin, delivering the perfect response to his earlier disappointment.

It was a performance befitting the champion that he is and kept his title aspirations alive, even if Waters now holds a 53-point advantage.

Waters claimed the round win on combined points, with Pearson second and West third.

Behind them, Broc Pearson recovered from another slow start to charge through to a hard-earned third, just ahead of West and Favelle.

Cam Dunker finished sixth after once again gaining pace as the race progressed.

A noteworthy performance came from Jack Favelle, who ran strongly with the likes of Pearson and West in both races. He clocked a best lap of 1m12.859s in race two — further evidence of his growing pace and racecraft. Two fifth-place finishes capped off a consistent and confidence-boosting weekend.

Cam Dunker matched Favelle’s points haul across the round, with 4-6 results. Interestingly, Favelle set his fastest lap on Lap 2, while Dunker’s best came on Lap 11, highlighting their contrasting race patterns.

The ASBK Superbike category reconvenes in August for a Superbike-only round held in conjunction with the V8 Supercars at Queensland Raceway. The full ASBK championship classes will next come together on the first weekend of September for a two-day round at Phillip Island.
