Monster Energy Supercross Heads to Toronto for the 12th Stop of the Year with Ryan Villopoto in the Driver’s Seat in the 450SX Class Points Race

When Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, makes its lone Canadian stop at Toronto’s Rogers Centre this Saturday night, Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart will race for his 49th career win, which will move him into second on the all-time 450SX Class win list. In the Eastern Regional 250SX Class, rookie Adam Cianciarulo, who rides for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team, continues his pursuit at the championship.

Some key insights into this weekend’s race are:

  • Stewart is tied with Ricky Carmichael on the all-time 450SX Class win list
  • Cianciarulo races for his fourth 250SX Class win
  • Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki will race for their eighth consecutive 250SX Class win
  • Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey race for their eighth podium finishes of the season
  • Justin Brayton kept his season-long top-10 streak alive with a ninth; he joins Andrew Short and Villopoto as the only riders to finish within the top 10 in every race

Last Saturday night, Stewart captured his third Monster Energy Supercross race of the season at Ford Field before a record 50,856 fans. The win tied Stewart with Carmichael on the all-time win list and placed him on the all-time win list at Ford Field with three.

The win, Stewart’s 48th, tied him with Carmichael for second place on the all-time win list. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo won the third Eastern Regional 250SX Class win of his career and extended his points lead.

Stewart moved into the lead at the end of the opening lap and never looked back.

“The track was slippery tonight, so it was easy to put your bike on the ground,” said Stewart. “I pulled a nice gap in the middle of the race, but I let it go as time went on. It has been a while since I have raced here in Detroit, and it was an awesome night.”

Villopoto, the three-time defending Monster Energy Supercross Champion, finished second and extended his points lead to 30, the largest margin of the season. Red Bull KTM’s Dungey finished third, marking his seventh podium finish of the season.

“I was able to get a good start tonight,” said Villopoto. “I made a mistake down the start straight but did regroup. It wasn’t enough, but I walked away with the points lead as we head into Toronto next weekend.”

Cianciarulo’s debut race at Ford Field was a successful one as he picked up his third win of the season and extended his points lead over his teammate Martin Davalos to 11.

“This year has started off great,” said Cianciarulo. “This was a very nerve-racking race for me because if I made one mistake, I would have given the race away. Overall, it was a great race, but it is only the fifth stop of the season, and there is a lot of racing left.”

GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle finished a career-best second place and sits third overall.

“I am happy to be able to be out front and battling for a win,” said Bogle. “I hope to keep doing this the rest of the season and pick up that first win.

The first race in Toronto was held on December 3, 2004 and Carmichael won on a Suzuki. Villopoto is the winningest 450SX Class rider in Toronto with three. The first points-paying 250SX Class race in Toronto was on March 28, 2009 and Christophe Pourcel won on a Kawasaki. There has never been a repeat winner in the 250SX Class at Toronto until the 2012 stop when Justin Barcia completed that task.
