Hunter Lawrence takes RedBud red plate as Davies doubles up

Hunter Lawrence turned frustration into a 450MX overall win at RedBud, while Cole Davies went back-to-back in 250MX and Kayd Kingsford flew the Aussie flag in SMX Next.

2026 AMA Pro Motocross Championship

Round Five – Red Bud

The 2026 AMA Pro Motocross Championship reached RedBud on America’s Fourth of July weekend, with the 5.11 RedBud National also forming Round 22 of the wider SMX World Championship regular season.

Overnight rain gave way to a warm and changing RedBud circuit, and the race action followed the same pattern. The 450 class swung back and forth between the Lawrence brothers and Jorge Prado, while the 250s again belonged to the fast-rising Australasian threat of Cole Davies.

Hunter Lawrence ultimately went 2-1 to claim the 450MX overall, his second straight round victory and third of the season. It also moved the Queenslander back into the red plate, three points clear of brother Jett Lawrence.

Jett still won the opening moto, but the day was anything but straightforward. Hunter had looked set to steal Moto 1 after passing both Prado and Jett, only for a late problem in traffic to hand the race back to his younger brother. Jett then endured a scrappy second moto, going down twice and salvaging fifth while still clearly frustrated at not being able to ride with his usual fluency as he continues to work around that ankle injury.

In 250MX, Davies again proved the man to beat. The New Zealander topped qualifying, won the opening moto, then finished second to Jo Shimoda in Moto 2 to claim back-to-back 250MX overalls. Shimoda’s 3-1 scorecard was enough to move him into the championship lead, but Davies is now only four points behind.

The Australian and New Zealand thread also extended into SMX Next, where Goulburn’s Kayd Kingsford went 6-3 for fourth overall, while Willowbank’s Blake Thomas finished 19th.

450MX

Jett Lawrence started the day quickest in 450 qualifying, stopping the clock at 2m16.573 to edge Haiden Deegan, Hunter Lawrence and Jorge Prado for first gate pick.

Prado then launched out of the gate in Moto 1 and led the Lawrence brothers early. Jett soon worked his way past the Spaniard and took control, but Hunter continued to build. Once Hunter moved past Prado, he began reeling in Jett, then made his move before the race clock expired.

For a brief period it looked as though Hunter had turned the race on its head. He had stretched his advantage to more than seven seconds before a late issue in traffic cost him dearly. Jett inherited the lead and took the moto win by 3.271 seconds over Hunter, with Prado third, RJ Hampshire fourth and Garrett Marchbanks fifth.

Deegan’s opening race was compromised almost immediately after a first-turn incident left him at the back of the field. He recovered to 10th, but that left him with plenty to do in Moto 2.

Prado again nailed the start in the second 450 moto, this time leading Deegan and Jett. Hunter was sixth early, but steadily went to work.

Jett’s race began to unravel when he lost the rear and went down while chasing Deegan. He remounted outside the top ten, then went down again while trying to recover through the pack. Hunter, meanwhile, moved forward to third, then passed Deegan for second with around 13 minutes left on the clock.

At that point Prado was more than nine seconds clear, but Hunter began carving into the margin. The KTM rider stabilised the gap for a while, but Hunter eventually closed in and made the pass with less than three minutes remaining.

From there the Honda rider disappeared, taking the chequered flag 11.228 seconds ahead of Prado. Deegan finished third, Hampshire fourth and Jett fifth.

Hunter’s 2-1 was enough for the overall and the red plate. Prado’s 3-2 gave him second overall, while Jett’s 1-5 put him third on countback after tying Prado on points. Hampshire was fourth overall on a consistent 4-4, Marchbanks fifth, and Deegan sixth.

Prado’s day was also an important marker for KTM. He holeshot both motos, led meaningful laps, and again showed that he is edging closer to turning his European-style start speed into a full U.S. outdoor race win.

Triumph also had its strongest 450MX round to date. Mikkel Haarup went 7-7 for seventh overall on the TF 450-X, matching the season-best result he first achieved at High Point. Jordon Smith backed that up with 11-12 for 11th overall as he continues to build in his first 450MX outdoor season.

Aaron Plessinger’s day ended early after a first-turn crash in Moto 1, with KTM confirming he would undergo further evaluation.

Hunter Lawrence

“[This win] is so good. It’s America’s 250th birthday and we’re so grateful for the opportunity we have here [in this country]. We’re living the American dream and couldn’t have this life anywhere else in the world. What a day.”

Jett Lawrence

“I doubled down [in Moto 2] with my terrible riding today. I made a decision with the team to go a certain way on the bike, and it didn’t work. Hunter [Lawrence] is riding really well so we’ll go back to work and try to come out better at Southwick.”

Jorge Prado

“It’s an awesome experience racing at RedBud. We used the week off to make some improvements on the bike, and in the second moto I felt way more like myself. We led laps, we got the holeshot, and I’m really happy with the steps we’ve made. We’re coming.”

250MX

Cole Davies carried his High Point momentum straight into RedBud. The Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing rider topped 250 qualifying with a 2m19.661, ahead of team-mate Caden Dudney, Levi Kitchen, Ryder DiFrancesco and Michael Mosiman.

Moto 1 started with Dudney and Davies leading the field away. Dudney took the holeshot and, for much of the race, looked like he might convert that start into a breakthrough moto win. He led the opening 12 laps while Davies stalked him from second.

Behind them, the fight for third was busier. Casey Cochran, Levi Kitchen and Jo Shimoda all spent time in that group, with Shimoda eventually slicing through to third.

Up front, Davies waited until the closing stages before making his move on Dudney. Once through, he pulled clear to take the win by 2.670 seconds. Dudney still claimed a strong second, while Shimoda, Kitchen and Cochran completed the top five.

Moto 2 looked like it might fall Davies’ way again when he grabbed the start and began stretching the field. Cochran was lively early, moving into second, but Shimoda soon began working forward.

The Honda rider passed his way to second and then started hunting Davies. The gap was still more than seven seconds with 20 minutes remaining, but Shimoda kept chipping away. With around three-and-a-half minutes on the clock, he got alongside Davies and took the lead.

Shimoda then bolted away to win by 11.132 seconds, his first Pro Motocross moto win of the season. Davies finished second, with DiFrancesco third, Cochran fourth and Kitchen fifth.

Davies’ 1-2 scorecard still secured the overall, making him the first repeat 250MX winner of the 2026 outdoor season. Shimoda’s 3-1 gave him second overall and the championship lead, while DiFrancesco’s 6-3 delivered the first overall podium of his 250MX career.

Cochran made it two Husqvarnas inside the top four, while Kitchen’s 4-5 left him fifth overall and dropped him from the championship lead to third. West Australian Kayden Minear was consistent all day, going 9-9 for ninth overall, while New Zealander Brodie Connolly finished 25th.

Deacon Denno gave Triumph a solid 250 result with 13-13 for 12th overall. Austin Forkner remained sidelined as he continues to recover from his Colorado crash.

Cole Davies

“Jo [Shimoda] was riding good. It’s a long championship and we have a long way to go. It was a good day, and we got a win at RedBud. That’s all I can ask for. We’re in a really good spot with the bike right now so I’m really happy.”

SMX Next

The SMX Next Scouting Moto Combine brought 25 leading amateur prospects to RedBud, with one moto held on Friday before weather forced the second race into Saturday’s program.

Carson Wood was the class of the field. He topped the overall with a perfect 1-1 scorecard for Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing, edging Landon Gibson in both motos. Gibson went 2-2 for second overall, while Kade Johnson completed the podium via 3-4 results.

Kayd Kingsford was the key Australian performer. The Goulburn rider qualified second on the Quad Lock Honda and then went 6-3 across the two motos to finish fourth overall, only two points shy of the podium.

Blake Thomas, from Willowbank, finished 19th overall after going 19-15.

Southwick next

The series now heads to the sand, with Round Six of AMA Pro Motocross scheduled for The Wick 338 at Southwick, Massachusetts, on Saturday, July 11.

Hunter Lawrence takes a three-point 450MX championship lead over Jett Lawrence into Southwick, while Jo Shimoda leads Cole Davies by four points in 250MX.
