Did Saturday’s result here in the opening race of the 2026 ASBK season signal a changing of the guard?

We witnessed what was perhaps the youngest ever podium in Australian Superbike history on Saturday with Harrison Voight running away to a clear victory while Jacob Roulstone and Cam Dunker got their elbows out and showed plenty of youthful vigour and venom as they jostled with the rest of the leading pack for the final steps on the rostrum.

On Friday, Anthony West, one of the oldest riders in the field, had been the pacesetter, but the veteran fluffed the start on Saturday as he forgot how to engage launch control on his Desmosport Ducati debut and was swamped off the line.

Defending champ Josh Waters also had a few issues, including a coming together with Westy that put him behind the eight ball before he regrouped to bag good points for fourth in the opening race.

Cru Halliday and Glenn Allerton have had a few issues to deal with this weekend and were yet to really show their potential, while new YRT signing Jonathan Nahlous also had a few gremlins stunt his progress in race one.

It is fair to say more than a few were seeking redemption here at Phillip Island on Sunday morning, but after experiencing almost perfect conditions on Friday and Saturday, clouds were gathering on the horizon as the machines warmed up in the pits.

There had been some gentle spits of rain earlier in the morning, and the radar painted a gloomy outlook for the rest of the day. Rain was coming, it was just a matter of when…

The Supersport 300 competitors kicked off Sunday morning proceedings on a track that was declared wet before a short delay and a shortened four-lap race. In reality, the track was not really wet, just damp, that horrible middle ground between the two, but it still looked likely to afford quite a lot of grip, until you hit a patch where it didn’t…

The track had dried a fair bit by the time Superbike competitors exited pit-lane, as their crews cocked one eye towards the sky, pondering any last-minute tyre changes. The track temperature was around 25 degrees.

Poleman Harrison Voight reported on the grid that the track was pretty dry, except for the final sector, which was still quite wet. So a bit of everything then at random places on the track. Just what you want…

The race had been declared wet, but the consensus amongst the riders on the front row seemed to be that it was not quite damp enough to run wets. Most riders had gone out on wets only to change back to slicks on the grid.

Riders would need to keep their race position in the back of their minds throughout the race. If conditions worsen and officials red-flag the race and call it early, the leader on lap X or Y could be the winner… Bide your time? Or throw caution to the wind… Chips on Red or Black…?

Who was going to be the bravest on lap one…?

A bit of clutch shudder off the line for Josh Waters, but he still managed to tuck in behind his team-mate as they negotiated Southern Loop for the first time. Voight then ran a little wide, which opened the door for Waters to capitalise. Jacob Roulstone was quickly up to third while Glenn Allerton was scything through the field early on and took third place from Jacob on the entry to turn four.

Josh Waters led Voight and Allerton through the wet final sector for the first time. Allerton squeezed past Voight for second place, and Jacob Roulstone then pushed the race one victor further back to fourth at turn one as they started lap two, but Roulstone then ran wide and lost positions to Cam Dunker, Cru Halliday and Anthony West.

Up front, Josh Waters and Glenn Allerton were stretching away from the gaggle of riders fighting over third.

Cru Halliday sneaked up the inside of Harrison Voight at turn four to move into third position as Anthony West and Harrison Voight made it a Ducati 1-2-3-4-5.

A mistake by Voight then allowed a Yamaha and a Honda back into that party as Dunker and Roulstone shuffled the race one victor back to seventh.

Anthony West was the fastest man on lap three, a 1m33.318, but next time around, Jacob Roulstone stomped down a 1m32.421 despite the still somewhat sketchy conditions; however, the Honda man was still sixth as the race approached the halfway mark.

Those riders battling for third had started to reel in Waters and Allerton…  Glenn Allerton showed Waters his front wheel for the first time as they started lap six before pulling out of the move. If they started dusting each other up, that next group of riders headed by Halliday and West would be on them in no time…

Cam Dunker slipped under Westy at MG to move up to fourth place, which slowed the pair of them slightly and gave Cru Halliday a little more breathing room in third. Dunker recovered well, though, and was soon back on the tail of Halliday’s Stop & Seal Ducati.

Further back, Mike Jones was now the fastest man on track after putting in a 1m32.093 to get the better of Harrison Voight to move up to seventh and then picked off Westy for sixth.

Up front, things were hotting up as Dunker sneaked past Halliday and then inched towards the tail of Glenn Allerton.  Dunker almost slipped up the inside of Allerton at Hayshed but thought better of it at the last moment.  Dunker got it done, though, at turn two and pushed Allerton back to third as Jacob Roulstone forged his way up to fourth.

Dunker was amazing around the middle sector and closed right onto the tail of Waters and was all over the back of the defending champ through turn 12 and tucked in behind the Ducati down the chute and stayed there all the way down the straight and into Southern Loop as they started lap ten. Allerton and Roulstone were right there too…

Roulstone up the inside of Allerton at MG on the penultimate lap. Josh Waters somewhat baulked by a lapped rider through turn 12, and as they got to the last lap, it was Waters in front, but Dunker gazumped him on the entry to turn two! Roulstone third, Allerton fourth.. Waters and Dunker side by side through turn three, but Roulstone then splits them under brakes into turn four, while Harrison Voight had regouped and was now fourth after slipping past Allerton.

Down to MG for the final time, it was Dunker and Roulstone, Dunker in front but wide a little at eleven, which allowed Roulstone through, and the Honda youngster led them around turn twelve and carried that through to the flag!

A maiden win on his debut Australian Superbike round for the 21-year-old on the CFG MotoCity Honda. What a result and from a rider with next to no Superbike experience, and here in Australia this year, after losing his Moto3 ride at the end of 2025.

Maybe the Team Honda HRC squad are now regretting their decision not to put the youngster on Jake Dixon’s bike this weekend after the Brit was injured during testing.

Cam Dunker would be bitterly disappointed with that second place after what was a tremendous performance, but that will have him and his team pumped for race three this afternoon and the season ahead.

Josh Waters rounded out the podium ahead of Harrison Voight, Glenn Allerton and Anthony West, with that top six covered by six-tenths, and Mike Jones only three-tenths further behind in seventh.

Cru Halliday figured highly in that one for the first half of the race, but slipped out of the battle late on. Halliday still bagged good points for eighth and finished almost two seconds clear of Jonathan Nahlous.

Jack Favelle rounded out the top ten but was 20 seconds behind the nine riders in front of him.

With one race to go this afternoon, Roulstone is currently the points leader with a 45-point haul ahead of Harrison Voight on 43 and Cam Dunker on 38.
