Halliday and Edwards take poles as ASBK finale builds at QLD Raceway

Cru Halliday claimed Superbike pole ahead of Mike Jones and Jonathan Nahlous, while Tom Edwards topped Supersport/Next Gen qualifying as the 2026 ASBK finale moved towards its Sunday title deciders.

Round Five – QLD Raceway – Saturday
SW-Motech Superbike Qualifying

Cru Halliday will start Sunday’s final two SW-Motech Superbike races of the 2026 ASBK season from pole position after producing a 1m06.858 in Q2 at Queensland Raceway on Saturday afternoon.

That benchmark was only 0.013 of a second outside the current Superbike qualifying lap record set by Mike Jones at the venue last year, and completed a strong turnaround for Halliday after a difficult Morgan Park round that did little justice to his regular front-running pace.

With only 15 Superbike riders taking to the track on Saturday afternoon, the regular protagonists did not need to put too much on the line in Q1 to secure a place among the top 12 progressing to Q2. Jonathan Nahlous topped that opening qualifying session on a 1m07.206, but after most riders had banked a lap, the final two-thirds of the 20-minute session delivered little in the way of on-track action.

After a short break, Q2 promised the real fireworks, only for the session to be halted almost immediately when John Lytras stopped at Turn 3 with a mechanical issue and potential oil on the circuit. That brought out the red flag and left the track idle for around 20 minutes before the pit exit opened again, and the session resumed.

Mike Jones split the Ducati horde

Once it did, Ducati initially packed the top of the order. Halliday, Glenn Allerton, Harrison Voight and Josh Waters made it a Ducati 1-2-3-4 before Yamaha Racing Team intervened. Jones moved to second, then young team-mate Nahlous charged to fourth as the session began to properly build.

Halliday then lowered the marker again, a 1m06.858, extending his advantage over Jones to almost four-tenths. Jones responded with a 1m07.062 to close the gap to 0.204, while Nahlous pushed Allerton off the front row with a 1m07.235 shortly before the clocks expired.

When the dust settled, Halliday remained on top ahead of Jones and Nahlous, putting two Yamahas alongside the Stop and Seal Racing Ducati on the front row.

Row two will be all Ducati, with Allerton fourth, championship leader Voight fifth and defending champion Waters sixth.

Voight starts Sunday with a 24-point buffer over Waters after his perfect Morgan Park weekend, where he claimed pole, both race wins and the maximum 51-point haul. He can potentially wrap up the title in the opening 16-lap race, while Waters will need to attack from the second row to keep the fight alive into the final race of the season.

The battle for third in the championship is also far from settled. Cameron Dunker currently holds that position on 146 points, but starts only 11th after qualifying. Halliday, Allerton and Jones are all within striking distance, and all three will start well ahead of Dunker on the grid. Nahlous is also close enough to be a factor if Sunday swings his way.

Remarkably, seven of the 12 bikes in Q2 were Ducatis, with the remaining five Yamahas. Across the full 15-bike qualifying field, there were eight Ducatis and seven Yamahas.

Superbike competitors return to the track at 0915 on Sunday morning for a ten-minute warm-up ahead of the opening 16-lap race at 1125. The final race of the 2026 ASBK season is scheduled for 1520.

Supersport / Next Gen Qualifying

Tom Edwards will start Sunday’s Kawasaki Supersport / Next Gen races from pole position after producing a new Next Gen qualifying benchmark at Queensland Raceway.

The BCperformance Kawasaki rider had already been well in the mix during Q1, but saved his best for Q2, stopping the clocks at 1m10.425 to head the combined qualifying order and lower the Next Gen mark that Olly Simpson had set earlier in the day.

Simpson’s 1m10.452 from Q1 ultimately left the DesmoSport Ducati rider second on the grid, only 0.027 of a second behind Edwards, while Tom Toparis made it three different machines inside the top three after switching from the Ducati V2 he had campaigned earlier in the season back to his trusted Yamaha YZF-R6 for the Queensland Raceway finale.

Toparis was third overall on a 1m10.578, only 0.153 away from pole, with Hayden Nelson fourth on the second BCperformance Kawasaki. Nelson’s best came in Q1, with his Q2 session ending prematurely after a Turn 6 crash.

That leaves the two Next Gen title protagonists split by three places on the grid, with Edwards on pole and Nelson fourth. Edwards arrived at Queensland Raceway with a four-point advantage over Nelson, 188 to 184, after the pair traded blows at Morgan Park. Simpson and Toparis are no longer in the same title position, but both have the pace to heavily influence how the inaugural Next Gen crown is decided on Sunday.

Jake Farnsworth did what he needed to do in the traditional Supersport fight, qualifying as the best of the traditional Supersport riders and fifth overall on a 1m10.712. The Worth Racing Yamaha rider is trying to claw back a 16-point deficit to Valentino Knezovic after a frustrating Morgan Park round in which he led early in Race One before an engine problem, then bounced back to win the Supersport class in Race Two.

Knezovic, who continues to lead the Supersport standings on 184 points to Farnsworth’s 168, qualified sixth overall and second in class with a 1m11.082. That puts the two main Supersport title contenders together on the grid, with Farnsworth one place ahead heading into Sunday’s two championship-deciding races.

Anupab Sarmoon qualified seventh overall and third among the Supersport riders, ahead of Will Nassif, Sam Pezzetta, Jordy Simpson and Josh Soderland. Jordy Simpson remains third in the Supersport points on 136, with Ghage Plowman, Soderland and Pezzetta also fighting over the final championship podium positions.

Supersport was run and done by 1230 on Saturday, with competitors able to hit the showers early. They reconvene on Sunday morning at 0905 for a five-minute warm-up session ahead of the two 14-lap bouts slated for 1025 and 1445.

The current Supersport qualifying record remains Tom Toparis’ 1m10.381, set on a Yamaha YZF-R6 at Queensland Raceway in 2024.
