Aussies score in FIM Juniors as Lucas wins Moto4 opener from back of grid!

2026 FIM MotoJunior FIM World Championship

Round One – Catalunya

The 2026 FIM MotoJunior World Championship opened at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with close racing across Moto3 Junior, Moto2, Moto4 and Stock, and with Australia well represented in the Moto2 European Championship points.

A reported 10,000 spectators attended the Barcelona opener, the first round under the championship’s refreshed MotoJunior identity. The programme included two races each for Moto3 Junior and Moto2, with single races for the Momoven Moto4 European Cup and Stock European Championship.

Jacob Roulstone was the standout Australian performer of the opening MotoJunior weekend, the Team Ciatti – Boscoscuro rider taking seventh in both Moto2 European Championship races on debut in the category.

The former Red Bull Rookies Cup race winner looked increasingly comfortable as the weekend progressed. While front tyre wear limited how hard he could attack in both races, Roulstone spent time with the lead group in Race Two and finished closer to the winner than in the opener. Two seventh places from his first Moto2 weekend was a strong return, putting him seventh in the championship on 18 points.

“I’m quite happy with this weekend overall; it went better than I expected. We’ve been making steady progress and in the second race I felt better than in the first. In fact, I managed to ride several laps with the leading group. It was a shame in both races that my front tyre wore out from the early laps because it didn’t let me push as hard as I would have liked to overtake. But hey, we’re learning, we’re getting closer and closer. Now, we need to focus on continuing to train, on improving my riding position with my team… we’re ready to keep improving at Estoril.”

Harrison Voight also left Barcelona with a solid haul after finishing eighth and ninth for Cardoso Racing. The Australian made no secret of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya being one of his least favourite venues, which puts two top-ten finishes and the team’s first points of the season in a more positive light. Voight felt the lap times, and results were respectable given the circumstances, while Cardoso Racing noted that he had consistently been among the faster riders in the class across the weekend.

“It’s been a difficult day, but it hasn’t been all bad. Of course, both I and the team want better results, but it’s also true that this is one of the most challenging circuits for me. We’ve worked well, we’ve improved every day of the weekend and I must thank the team because they’ve worked very well and very hard. Overall, I think we’re in a good starting position compared to last year, so we’re going to keep working.”

Jonathan “JJ” Nahlous made a productive start to his Moto2 career with points in both races for AGR Team. He started Race One from 17th, made a good launch, but admitted his opening laps were not strong enough, and that cost him ground before he recovered to finish 12th. In Race Two, Nahlous improved his start and early laps, but did not quite have the pace to stay with the top-ten group, eventually finishing 13th. It was still a useful first weekend in the European Moto2 class, with two points finishes and clear progression across the two starts.

“I think my nerves got the better of me at the start of my first Moto2 race. Towards the end, I noticed I was starting to feel more comfortable and I scored my first points. In the second race, I wanted to be more aggressive in the opening laps and that’s what I did. I felt really good and, once again, we scored points and were close to the top 10, so we’re happy.”

Declan Van Rosmalen also completed both Moto2 races on the EAGLE-1 Kalex, finishing 21st and 22nd as he continued to build mileage in a deep field.

In Moto3 Junior, Marianos Nikolis opened his campaign with points in Race One, finishing 14th for Team Monlau Motul on the Honda. His second race ended after three laps, which left him 18th in the championship on two points after Barcelona. Levi Russo finished both Moto3 Junior races for SF Racing, taking 23rd and 24th as he continued to adapt to the European Moto3 Junior field.

Overall, it was a positive Australian start to the MotoJunior season, particularly in Moto2, where Roulstone, Voight and Nahlous all scored in both races and leave Barcelona with a platform to build on at Estoril next month.

FIM Moto3 Junior World Championship

Moto3 Junior opened with the sort of tight group racing that has long defined the class, with Leonardo Zanni and Giulio Pugliese sharing the wins.

Race One was decided by just 0.006 seconds, Zanni taking victory for Momoven Racing ahead of CFMOTO Aspar Junior Team’s Pugliese. Kiandra Ramadhipa completed the podium for Honda Asia-Dream Racing Junior Team after post-race penalties reshuffled the order behind the lead pair.

Carlos Cano had crossed the line in podium contention, but a three-second penalty for overtaking under yellow flags dropped him to eighth in the revised classification. Guillem Planques and Kerman Tinez were also penalised for the same offence, which elevated Ramadhipa to third, Ryota Ogiwara to fourth and AGR Team’s Kgopotso Mononyane to fifth.

The race also renewed the Cano versus Fernando Bujosa thread from last year’s Momoven Moto4 European Cup, although Bujosa’s first Moto3 Junior race of the season ended in retirement after ten laps. Travis Borg recorded the fastest lap of the race, a 1m47.942, before also retiring.

Marianos Nikolis was the leading Australian in Race One, finishing 14th for Team Monlau Motul on the Honda and scoring two championship points. Levi Russo finished 23rd for SF Racing on the KTM.

Race Two was even more compressed at the front. Pugliese took victory by 0.091 seconds from Borg, with Bujosa third, just 0.140 seconds from the winner. Cano finished fourth and Leonardo Abruzzo fifth, while Ramadhipa and Ogiwara completed the top seven.

Zanni’s hopes of a double ended early when he retired after three laps, although he did set the fastest lap of the race, a 1m48.593. Bujosa’s podium was his first in Moto3 Junior and a useful recovery after the frustration of Race One.

Nikolis’ second race ended after three laps, while Russo finished 24th, adding more European Moto3 mileage after starting the weekend from the back of the grid following a penalty.

Pugliese leaves Barcelona with the Moto3 Junior championship lead on 45 points. Ramadhipa is second on 26, Zanni third on 25, with Ogiwara and Cano completing the top five. Nikolis is 18th in the standings on two points.

FIM Moto3 Junior World Championship Points

Moto2 European Championship

The Moto2 European Championship opener produced two different winners, a championship lead for reigning title-holder Milan Pawelec, and three Australians in the points.

Pawelec started his title defence with victory in Race One for AGR Team, continuing the momentum that carried him to the 2025 title. The Polish rider had trailed Unai Orradre until the latter stages before making the decisive move on lap 12. Orradre finished second, with Francesco Mongiardo completing the podium for MMR.

Polesitter Eric Fernandez had led early before crashing at Turn 10 on lap four, which changed the shape of the race and left Pawelec and Orradre to dispute the win. Orradre also set the fastest lap, a 1m42.701 on lap two, but Pawelec’s race management proved decisive.

Dennis Foggia finished sixth in Race One for Team Ciatti – Boscoscuro, one place ahead of team-mate Jacob Roulstone. The Australian rookie put together a measured first Moto2 race, finishing seventh and keeping himself in the main points-paying group. Harrison Voight was eighth for Cardoso Racing, Jonathan Nahlous 12th for AGR Team, and Declan Van Rosmalen 21st on the EAGLE-1 Kalex.

Race Two delivered a late post-race twist. Orradre crossed the line first, but a last-lap track limits penalty dropped him one position and handed victory to Foggia. It was Foggia’s first win in the class and a strong response after he and Team Ciatti had felt they left something on the table in Race One.

Foggia had led for much of Race Two before Orradre attacked late. The heat and tyre stress were again major factors, with the front group running a high pace in difficult conditions. Pawelec finished third, giving him a win and a third from the weekend and the championship lead on 41 points. Orradre leaves Barcelona second in the standings on 40, with Foggia third on 35.

Roulstone again finished seventh in Race Two, but the quality of that second result was in the margin. He was closer to the winner than he had been in Race One and spent time with the lead group before tyre wear limited his ability to attack. Roulstone said the weekend went better than he expected, noting that he felt stronger in the second race and had been able to run several laps with the front group, but that front tyre wear restricted how hard he could push when trying to overtake.

That double seventh places Roulstone seventh in the championship with 18 points after his first Moto2 weekend, a strong return in a class that rarely gives rookies much time to settle.

It was still a solid first weekend in the European Moto2 class, with points in both races and clear progression across the two starts.

Van Rosmalen completed both races, finishing 21st and 22nd, gaining mileage in a deep Moto2 field.

Momoven Moto4 European Cup

The Moto4 race produced the recovery ride of the weekend, with Álvaro Lucas winning from 28th on the grid.

Lucas had been sent to the back after a slow-riding penalty in Saturday’s second qualifying session, but the CFMOTO Aspar Junior Team rider worked through the pack and reached the front when it mattered. He also set the fastest lap, a 1m50.925, on lap two.

The finish was almost impossibly tight. Lucas defeated Edoardo Savino by just 0.006 seconds, denying the Leopard Junior rider a first win in the class. Lorenzo Pritelli, who had started from pole and was in the victory fight throughout, completed the podium for Team Echovit Pasini Racing only 0.124 seconds behind the winner.

Qabil Irfan was fourth for SIC – GRYD Racing, ahead of Cristian Borrelli and Evan Boxberger. The top six were covered by just 0.576 seconds, a fair indication of how close the lead group remained across the 13-lap race.

AGR Team rookie Luuk de Vries, who was making his first start in the category on his birthday, finished 20th. He recovered after a poor start and early mistakes, describing the weekend as a valuable learning exercise.

Stock European Championship

Blai Trias made the strongest possible start to the Stock European Championship, converting pole position into victory for GV Tamoil Racing.

Trias did not make the cleanest getaway and Alberto Garcia led the opening lap, but the Spaniard quickly regrouped. By lap two he was back at the head of the race, setting the fastest lap of 1m46.099 and then controlling the contest from the front.

Yeray Ruiz kept the pressure on for Team Honda Laglisse FPS but could not force a mistake, eventually finishing second, 3.643 seconds behind Trias. Lorenzo Fellon completed the podium for SF Racing in his first Stock European Championship race, holding off Filippo Fuligni and Garcia for third.

Juanes Rivera, Miguel Bernal, Jacobo Hinojosa, David Jimenez and Cristian Lolli completed the top ten.

With Trias winning from pole, Ruiz the closest sustained challenger, and Fellon immediately on the podium as a class rookie, Barcelona provided an early reference point for the Stock field.
