2026 Indian Chief Vintage
Indian Motorcycle has expanded its Chief range for 2026 with the introduction of the Chief Vintage, a model that leans more heavily into traditional styling while retaining the modern chassis, electronics and engine package introduced with the current Chief platform.
Inspired by Indian’s 1940s-era Chief models, the 2026 Chief Vintage combines deeply valanced fenders, wire-spoke wheels and a floating solo seat with contemporary rider aids and infotainment. The model is scheduled to arrive in Australia in the second or third quarter of 2026, with local pricing to be confirmed closer to launch.
At the heart of the Chief Vintage is Indian’s air-cooled Thunderstroke 116 V-twin, displacing 1890 cc and producing a claimed 156 Nm of torque at 3300 rpm. The engine remains a stressed member of the steel frame and drives the rear wheel via a six-speed gearbox and belt final drive. Rear cylinder deactivation is fitted to reduce heat when idling or riding in traffic.
Indian has paid particular attention to visual detailing on the Thunderstroke motor. Black, non-machined cylinders and silver-painted cylinder heads reference manufacturing finishes used on original post-war Chiefs, while pushrod tubes and fasteners are styled to match the period aesthetic.
Despite the heritage cues, the Chief Vintage retains modern rider technology. A 101 mm round touchscreen display, powered by Indian’s RIDE COMMAND system, provides ride data, Bluetooth connectivity and navigation where supported. The latest software reduces start-up times and allows destinations to be sent from compatible smartphone mapping apps directly to the bike.
Three ride modes – Tour, Standard and Sport – alter throttle response, while ABS, LED lighting, keyless ignition and a USB charge port are fitted as standard.
Chassis geometry mirrors other Chief models, with a 1626 mm wheelbase, 29-degree rake and 131.5 mm of trail. Suspension consists of a 46 mm telescopic fork with 132 mm of travel and dual rear shocks offering 75 mm of movement. Braking is handled by single 298 mm discs front and rear with ABS.
The Chief Vintage rolls on 16-inch wire-spoke wheels fitted with Metzeler Cruisetec tyres, and seat height is a low 686 mm, reinforcing the bike’s relaxed cruiser ergonomics. Wet weight is listed at 327 kg, with a 15.1-litre fuel tank.
Indian will offer the 2026 Chief Vintage in Indian Motorcycle Red or Black Metallic, with a range of factory accessories available, including quick-release windscreens, leather-look saddlebags, highway bars and touring-focused seating options.
While the Chief Vintage is positioned as a more traditional alternative within the Chief family, it remains built on Indian’s current cruiser platform, blending classic styling with modern engineering rather than recreating a retro motorcycle outright.
